Description

Male. Integument black. Prothorax reddish; pronotum with a large black area gradually enlarged from apex to base where it almost reaches the sides of prothorax. Frons, clypeus, margin of lower eye lobes and mandibles densely clothed by silky, yellowishwhite pubescence obscuring integument. Vertex sparsely pubescent.

Antennae exceeding middle of elytra by one or two segments. Scape subpyriform, shiny, finely rugose-punctate. Segments 3–5 practically cylindrical, opaque, finely, densely punctuate, with yellowish-white sparse pubescence and some apical setae; 6–10 subserrate, decreasing in length, finely punctuate with yellowish-white pubescence and moderately long, erect setae, gradually more conspicuous to distal segments; 9, 10 shortest, somewhat swollen; 11 suboval, as long as 3.

Prothorax either slightly enlarged at middle, attenuate to apex and base, or barely sinuate before and behind middle; base as wide as middle. Pronotum shallowly reticulate in black area; latero-basal gibbosities prominent, subrounded. Anterior margin of prosternum with a small, median projection. Pubescence of ventral surface, except prosternum, moderately long, silky.

Elytra subparallel at sides. Disk depressed, especially at base; dorsal costa prominent from base almost to apex, straight or curved inwards at apex. Moderately coarsely, densely, subseriately punctuate at basal half, the punctures more or less arranged in four or five rows, separated by one diameter or less, and becoming finer, shallower and denser apically; a single row of punctures between dorsal and lateral costae, except at base and apex with finer, not seriate punctures. Clothed by silky, whitish or yellowish pubescence denser apically, almost obscuring punctures at apical half; whitish, erect setae more evident along suture and costae, sparser throughout. Epipleura with moderately deep punctures partially obscured by pubescence. Margins weakly asperate, the asperities closer at apical third. Elytral apices rounded-truncate.

Inner side of each procoxa with a small, unciform projection with apex turned down and inwards (as in Figure 1B,C View Figure 1 ). Peduncles of femora shallowly sulcate. Metafemora surpassing elytral apices by half the length of club. Metatibiae straight. First segment of metatarsi 1.3 times as long as the following two combined.

Female. Similar to male. Antennae a little shorter. Metafemora reaching or exceeding elytral apices by the apex of the club.

Measurements (mm) male/female. Total length, 5.6–6.5/5.4–6.7; prothorax length, 1.3–1.5/1.3–1.6; maximum width of prothorax, 0.9–1.0/0.9–1.1; elytral length, 3.7– 4.5/3.8–4.6; humeral width, 1.2–1.4/1.2–1.4.

Type-material

Holotype male, from Brazil, São Paulo: Amparo, 1931, P. Recch col. ( MZSP) . Paratypes. Minas Gerais: Passos , one male, 12-17 November 1962, C. Elias col. ( MNRJ) ; São Paulo: Amparo , one male, 1931, P. Recch col. ( DZUP) , two females, 1931, P. Recch col. (MZSP, DZUP); Monte Alegre ( Fazenda Santa Maria , 1100 m), one male, 24–30 November 1942, F. Lane col. ( MZSP) .

Remarks

The specimens of this new species are often found with identification D. marginicollis Chevrolat, 1859 , because they have the same colouration pattern. However, the holotype of D. marginicollis , deposited in BMNH, was examined and found to have 10-segmented antennae, to lack the unciform projection on procoxae and the anterior margin of prosternum was broadly projected over the gula. Among the species with 11 antennal segments, D. uncinata sp. nov. is the only one having the prothorax reddish with the pronotum almost entirely black.

Etymology

From the Latin: uncus, hook; in reference to the unciform projection on the procoxae.
