Epiphytic herbs, 31.8−55.0 cm tall. Pseudobulbs ellipsoidal to ovoid, 4.3−6.8 × 0.7−3.5 cm. Leaves 1−3, oblanceolate to oblong, 27.5−48.1 × 1.2−2.5 cm, apex obtuse. Inflorescence a 5−12-flowered, simple to weakly compound raceme; peduncle 23.0− 34.3 cm long; rachis 5.3−17.5 cm long. Floral pedicel 1.5 × 0.2 cm; sepals green-olive, dorsal lanceolate, 1.6 × 0.6 cm, laterals lanceolate, 1.6 × 0.7 cm, pendent, margin entire, apex mucronate; petals green-olive, spatulate, 1.5 × 0.9 cm, pendent, margin undulate, apex mucronate; lip with claw 0.20 × 0.25 cm, lateral lobes free relative to the triangular midlobe, 0.7 × 0.5 cm, greenish, at an angle ˂45° to the midlobe (in the flattened lip), not overlapping it, margin entire, apex obtuse, midlobe obcordate, 0.4 × 0.6 cm, purple with white border, sinuous, margin undulate, apex obtuse, callus cymbiform, flabellate; column dolabriform, 0.7 × 0.3 cm, clinandrium apex tridentate, lateral teeth horn-like, apex premorse, arms of the column elliptic, 0.10 × 0.15 cm, apex obtuse; stigma oval, with basal hooks; anther one, yellow with red apex.
Distribution and habitat:— Endemic to the southeast ( Fig. 10 View FIGURE 10 ).
Phenology:— Flowering May–December.
Etymology:— From the Latin galla, branch, and pavus, peacock, in reference to the inflorescence that the author associated with a peacock.
Taxonomic notes:— Encyclia gallopavina has distinctive flower colours in which the sepals and petals are olive-green and the lip midlobe pink with white margins. The midlobe is obcordate and narrow and relatively small in relation to the short, broad and triangular lateral lobes.
