Type locality. Wiesen ( Austria), Eisenstadt-Sopron Basin .
Type stratum. Mollusc rich sand of the Skalica Formation.
Age. Middle Miocene, Sarmatian ( Ervilia Zone ) (= late Serravallian).
Diagnosis. Granulatocincta species of small size, broad buccinoid profile, coarsely sculptured, early whorls tripartite, bearing two swollen spiral cords with broad beads at adapical and abapical suture and narrower beaded central cord. Last whorl bearing strong rounded tuberculose cords at mid-whorl and narrower cords on base. Short, swollen twisted fasciole. Short siphonal canal.
Etymology. Callim, Latin for unknown to, concealed from. Referring to its overlooked status.
Description. Shell small, solid, broad buccinoid with conical spire; apical angle 41–48°. Protoconch not preserved. Teleoconch of up to eight flat-sided whorls bearing weakly opisthocline axial ribs with tripartite sculpture. Subsutural cord weakly tubercular, central cord with small beads, suprasutural cord with larger, axially elongated, opisthocline beads. On penultimate whorl a further spiral cord appears just above the suture, mostly covered by last whorl. Suture narrowly impressed, linear. Last whorl 65% of total height, ovoid. Subsutural collar broad, sharply delimited, subobsoletely tuberculose. Subsutural ramp narrow, filled with narrow beaded cord. Shoulder delimited by broad cord bearing low tubercles, two slightly narrower broad bands below with low tubercles, lower representing peribasal band. Base weakly constricted, bearing 4–5 narrower beaded cords; all cords separated by narrow grooves and secondary cords may be intercalated in some interspaces. Siphonal fasciole short, swollen, strongly twisted. Aperture wide, ovate; outer lip not thickened by varix, smooth within. Anal sinus deep, wide asymmetrically U-shaped, apex coinciding with beaded cord mid-ramp. Siphonal canal short, broad, shallowly notched at tip. Columella weakly excavated in upper third, weakly twisted below, smooth. Columellar and parietal callus strongly thickened, sharply delimited, forming broad callus rim.
Discussion. This species was misidentified as Granulatocincta sotterii ( Michelotti, 1847) by all authors since Hörnes (1854), except for Landau et al. (2013: 287), who doubted this identification. Granulatocincta sotterii was described from the Tortonian of Italy ( Bellardi 1877; Montanaro 1937; Ruggieri & Davoli 1984, Davoli 1990) and is clearly similar to the Paratethyan species in its general appearance. Nevertheless, the Italian species differs in its more conical spire, its constricted base, longer and narrower siphonal canal and the absence of a fourth row of beads at the abapical suture on the penultimate whorl (see Montanaro 1937: 117, pl. 5, figs 2–18; Ruggieri & Davoli 1984, pl. 4, figs 1, 6, 13, 14, 18, 19, Davoli 1990, pl. 8, figs 2–8). If both species are directly related, Granulatocincta sotterii would be the rare case of a Proto-Mediterranean species, which originated in the endemic fauna of the Sarmatian Paratethys. The ancestor of G. callim might be found in the Badenian G. contorta Švagrovský, 1958 .
Paleoenvironment. Inner neritic sand bottoms from littoral to shallow sublittoral environments (own data).
Distribution in Central Paratethys. Sarmatian (middle Miocene): Vienna Basin: Strážnice (the Czech Republic) ( Švagrovský 1958, 1971); Eisenstadt-Sopron Basin: Wiesen, Bad Sauerbrunn ( Austria) ( Papp 1954; hoc opus); Cserhát Mountains ( Hungary) ( Boda 1959), Soceni ( Romania) ( Jekelius 1944).
