Chemistry: norstictic acid (anal. J. Sutjaritturakan).

Distribution and habitat:—Pantropical, known from the U.S.A. (Florida; Lücking et al. 2011), Madagascar (Aptroot 2016) and the eastern palaeotropics, including Indonesia, Singapore, Papua New Guinea ( Aptroot & Sparrius 2008 –present), New Caledonia, Vanatu, Australia (Archer 2009) and Thailand, Loei province ( Poengsungnoen et al. 2010).

Remarks:—There is already a reference to this species in Nylander (1857: 150) where the author stressed the similarity with Graphis scripta (L.) Ach., stating that the two species only differ in a laterally carbonized exciple in the latter and a totally carbonized exciple in G. assimilis . Further differences include secondary chemistry.

Material from Thailand examined:— Phang-Nga province : Mueang district, in the area of Suan Somdet Srinagarindra Thara, on bark of an unidentified tree in a tropical rainforest, 08°25’59’’ N, 98°31’06’’ E, 15 m, 29 April 2012, J.
