Graphis proserpens Vainio (1909: 132) .
Type:— BRAZIL. Minas Gerais state: prope Sitio, ad corticem arboris, 1000 m, Vainio 1091 (TUR-Vainio 27557 A!, holotype, as Graphis disserpens Vain. , nom. illeg., non Nyl.) .
Thallus corticolous, whitish gray to greenish gray, continuous, smooth to uneven, corticate, slightly glossy. Lirellae erumpent, with a basal to lateral thalline margin, elongate, up to 4 mm long, straight, curved or sinuous, irregularly branched, labia convergent, very clearly 3–7-striate, disc concealed, (tenella- or striatula- morph). Exciple apically carbonized; hymenium clear; ascospores 8/ascus, hyaline, transversely 8–10-septate, 22–38 × 5–7 μm (D. D. Awasthi & R. Mathur, annotation slip attached to holotype); 7–11-septate, 20–40 × 6–9 μm ( Lücking et al. 2009).
Chemistry: no lichen substances by TLC (anal. A. W. Archer, on annotation slip attached to the holotype) .
Distribution and habitat:—Possibly pantropical ( Lücking et al. 2009), reported from Brazil (type locality), India (as G. sikkimensis Nagarkar & Patw. ) ( Lücking et al. 2009) and China ( Aptroot & Sparrius 2008 –present). Aptroot et al. (2007) first reported it from Thailand. The reference to this species in Buaruang et al. (2017), citing Pitakpong et al. 2015, is not from Thailand, but from the Philippines. Graphis proserpens was not present in our collections.
Remarks:—Very similar is G. perstriatula (see above), but this species is characterized in having muriform ascospores and in producing norstictic acid.
Material from Thailand reported:— Chiang Mai province: Tung Joaw trail off road to Pae , in Castanopsis forest remnants, 800–900 m, 19°08’24’’N, 98°38’17’’ E, 30 June 2004, Aptroot 61251 ( ABL) GoogleMaps .
