Candolle (1836: 78). Type:— BRAZIL. Minas Gerais: in summo Monte Itambé , C. F. P. von Martius s.n. (491) (holotype:

M e! [ M0029474 ]; isotype: G-DC e! [ G00464276 (fragment)] , P [not found]) ( Fig. 27 E View FIGURE 27 ).

Lychnophora subulata Gardner (1846: 231) View in CoL . Haplostephium passerina (Mart. ex DC.) Gardner var. subulatum (Gardner) Baker (1873: 149) View in CoL . Type:— BRAZIL. Minas Gerais: Diamond district, 1841, G. Gardner 4822 (lectotype: BM e! [BM001009191], designated by Coile & Jones (1983: 235); isolectotypes: K e! [K000484696, K000484697], P [not seen], S e! Haplostephium pinifolium Duarte (1974: 661) , as ‘ pinnifolium ’. Type:— BRAZIL. Minas Gerais: Grão Mogol, [in saxosis, ad marginem viae Cristalia parvulae pagus in vicinia Grão Mogol], 19 January 1971, A.P. Duarte 13694 (holotype: RB [ RB00650590 ]; isotypes: GZU e! Distribution and habitat: — Brazil ( Bahia , Minas Gerais). Campo rupestre; 400–1500 m.

Taxonomic notes: —A common and variable species recognized by its linear to subulate leaves and extremely reduced outer pappus. Very similar to Lychnophora ramosissima Gardner (1846: 232) , which differs by its smaller ovate leaves, with a subpungent mucro (vs. not pungent). The type material cited by Duarte (1974) for Haplostephium pinifolium is Duarte 13770 (RB 165447), however this material does not fit neither the description or the locality ( Diamantina instead of Grão Mogol) and corresponds to L. rosmarinifolia . The description, locality and picture ( Duarte 1974: Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 , page 662) fit perfectly the Duarte 13694 material, which has been distributed in various international herbaria as the type material of H. pinifolium (with a different collection date: 12/12/1970 instead of 01/19/1971 as in the holotype’s label).
