Perennial herbs, up to 2 m high, sub-glabrous to pilose stems with appressed hairs. Leaves with a short petiole, 0.3–1 cm long, narrow ovate blade, 4.5–10 × 0.5–2 cm, acute apex, attenuate base, sub-glabrous to scarce strigose pubescence randomly distributed, presence of sessile glands on abaxial surface, serrate margin. Capitula 1–1.5 cm diam., many-flowered, solitary, axillary to superior leaves, peduncle 0.5–4 cm long. Bracteoles 8–15 mm long, ovate, acuminate, strigose, ciliate margin. Calyx 3.75–5 mm up to 8 mm in fruit, exterior slightly pilose with sessile glands, interior with a dense band of thick and short hairs; teeth 2–3.5 mm long, sub-equal, triangular, aristate. Corolla white with pink spots, 5–8 mm long. Nutlets ovoid, 1.5 mm long, dark brown or chestnut color, smooth.
Remarks:—There are two duplicates (sheets) from the collection Hassler 8872, the type material of H. rugosula , in Herb. G. One of them is here designated as lectotype, following Arts. 8 and 9 of ICN ( McNeill et al. 2012; McNeill 2014).
Distribution and habitat: — Hyptis alata subsp. rugosula is found in the states of Parana and Santa Catarina in Brazil, in eastern Paraguay and in Argentina, where, up till now, it has only been collected in the province of Corrientes.
