Ilex gracilis C.J. Tseng (1981: 28) , syn. nov. Type:— CHINA. Yunnan, Gongshan, Taron-Taru Divide , Bucahwang Valley , 1600 m, 06. Sept. 1938, T. T. Yü 20137 (lectotype here designated: PE; isolectotype: PE).

Ilex cyrtura View in CoL is confined to NE Myanmar and W Yunnan, China, but Hu (1950 b) and Chen et al. (2008) included specimens from Guangdong, Guangxi and Guizhou in this species. There is a rather long distance (ca. 800 km in a straight line) between these two areas. The type of I. gracilis, T. T. Yü View in CoL 20137, was identified first as I. franchetiana Loesener (1911: 77) View in CoL by Hu (1950), but later identified as I. melanotricha Merrill (1941: 101) View in CoL by Tseng on the same sheet. However, the collection has the peduncle plus pedicel 2–2.5 (–4) mm long, the fruit 4 mm in diameter, and the acumen of the leaf blade 1.2–1.6 cm long. These character states, particularly the length of the acumen, indicate that I. gracilis View in CoL should be considered as conspecific with I. cyrtura View in CoL .
