Type locality. Reserva Biológica da Campina (S2º 35’27” W60º 1’51”), Amazonas State, Brazil.
Diagnosis. Head red, postclypeus strongly compressed, angulated in profile with one longitudinal carina and a strongly marked lateral ridge; thorax red, pronotum with median carina, forewing either all black or apical third red and distal third black, legs black.
Description. Head ( Figs 20–23 View FIGURES 15 – 30. 15 – 23 ): red, with rostrum reddish brown; compound eyes rounded, arranged transversely; vertex smooth, rectangular lacking median carina; ocelli red, closer to each other than to compound eyes; tylus rectangular, smooth, with median carina; antennae reddish brown, pedicel abundantly setose, basal body of flagellum conic without arista; postclypeus red, strongly compressed, angulated in profile with one longitudinal carina, lateral grooves slightly marked, lateral ridge present and strongly marked; rostrum extending to mesocoxae.
Thorax ( Figs 20–23 View FIGURES 15 – 30. 15 – 23 ): red; pronotum red, hexagonal, with median carina, anterior margin straight, lateralanterior margins straight, lateral posterior margin slightly sinuous, posterior margin grooved; scutellum red, with slight central concavity and horizontal grooves slightly marked; tegmina black with visible venation, apical reticulation not developed; hindwings hyaline with brownish venation, vein Cu1 thickened at base; legs reddish brown, metathoracic tibia with two lateral spines (basal spine smaller than those located in the apical crown and apical spine larger); apical crown of tibia with two rows of spines; basitarsus with one row of spines covered by sparse setae; subungueal process present, similar to claws. Abdomen: black. Genitalia: Male: Pygofer ( Fig. 19 View FIGURES 15 – 30. 15 – 23 ) with hooked process between anal tube and subgenital plates; subgenital plates ( Fig. 19 View FIGURES 15 – 30. 15 – 23 ) short with digitiform apex; parameres ( Fig. 18 View FIGURES 15 – 30. 15 – 23 ) each with one apical spine directed posteriorly, apex long and slender, dorsal process developed, rounded and prominent; aedeagus ( Figs 15–16 View FIGURES 15 – 30. 15 – 23 ) cylindrical with two pairs of fin-like processes, the first pair located at apex and the second located medially, both inserted laterally. Female ( Fig. 17 View FIGURES 15 – 30. 15 – 23 ): First valvula of ovipositor short and wide with acute apex and one basal process poorly developed, rounded, directed ventrally; second valvulae short, apical third of dorsal margin serrate, third valvulae short and wide, with long setae ventrally.
Measurements (mm). Body length: Ƥ 8.4–8.5, 3 8.3–8.5; pronotal length: Ƥ 1.5–1.6, 3 1.0–1.1; forewing length: Ƥ 6.4–6.9, 3 6.6–6.9; maximum width of head, including eyes: Ƥ 1.7–1.8, 3 1.2–1.6; width between humeral angles: Ƥ 3.2–3.3, 3 2.2–2.9.
Distribution. BRAZIL: Amazonas State.
Remarks. This species is dimorphic with regard to the color of the forewings: some specimens have the tegmina entirely black, whereas others have the basal third of the tegmina red and the distal region black.
Etymology. The species name “ amazonica ” refers to the region where the type specimen was collected.
