Distribution:— Brazil.
Notes:— Pohl (1827) simultaneously described Cnidoscolus lobatus , C. quercifolius , and C. repandus based on Martius collections that were annotated in the herbarium as Janipha phyllacantha . His mere mention of Martius’ binomial Janipha phyllacantha by no means constitutes the valid publication of the name. Nearly 40 years later Müller (1866) proposed Jatropha phyllacantha Müll.Arg. and treated Pohl’s species as varieties. Thus, J. phyllacantha is an illegitimate superfluous name, and despite being accepted by various authors, it has no nomenclatural standing. Cnidoscolus quercifolius , C. repandus , and C. lobatus all have equal priority. McVaugh (1944) chose C. quercifolius as accepted name for the taxon, thus relegating both C. repandus and C. lobatus into synonymy.
