Taxonomic notes: —According to Marhold & Sklená ř (2013), the records of S. imbaburensis Sklená View in CoL ř & Marhold in Marhold & Sklená ř (2013: 59) from Carchi in Ecuador (Sklená ř 2001) and southern Nariño in Colombia (Ávila et al. in Bernal et al. 2015) are here identified as S. gargantanus (Cuatrecasas) Cuatrecasas (1950: 44) View in CoL . It is a variable species concerning the capitula number and the leaf width.

Nomenclatural notes: —We located three duplicates of Garganta’s collection nº 205. The specimen COL-000004858 is designated as the lectotype of the name C. gargantanum Cuatrecasas (1942: 29) . It contains four stems displaying 2–3 capitula each. There are isolectotypes at COL and F.
