Paratanytarsus Thienemann & Bause, 1913 View in CoL
There are six species of Paratanytarsus recorded from Alaska. We collected Paratanytarsus austriacus (Kieffer, 1924) from two sites in Southeast Alaska, the East Alsek River in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, and a pond at the outlet of Steep Creek in Juneau. This is a new faunistic record for Alaska. Paratanytarsus geminilacus sp. nov. adults were collected around Twin Lakes in Juneau in mid-July. We collected adults of Paratanytarsus inopertus (Walker, 1856) from Medvejie Creek in Sitka in mid-June and from Twin Lakes in mid-July. Lackmann et al. (2020) described a parthenogenic population of Paratanytarsus laccophilus (Edwards, 1929) from tundra ponds near Utqiagvik. Paratanytarsus lauterborni (Kieffer, 1909) larvae were collected by Webb et al. (2022) from Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. We collected P. lauterborni adults from Auke Lake in mid-August. Butler et al. (1980) collected Paratanytarsus penicillatus (Goetghebuer, 1928) adults from tundra ponds near Utqiagvik. Watson et al. (1966) collected this species as Lundstromia penicillatus from the Ogoturuk Valley Region. Oliver et al. (1990) reported Paratanytarsus similatus ( Malloch, 1915) from Alaska, however, provided no collection history. We collected Paratanytarsus larvae and pupae from a stream near Lena Point, Juneau and larvae from a Sheridan Glacier uplift pond. Larvae of Paratanytarsus were common in our samples from Arctic streams and lakes and Southeast Alaska lakes. Hayford et al. (2014) reported larvae from the Kuskokwin River, and Hershey (1985) reported larvae from Toolik Lake, which were more abundant in macrophyte zones compared to bare sediments. Brabets & Ourso (2013) found Paratanytarsus larvae in streams in Denali National Park, and Sikes et al. (2016) found them on St. Matthew Island.
