Lychnophora riedelii Schultz-Bipontinus (1863: 351) View in CoL . Type :— BRAZIL. Minas Gerais: in mont. siccis, 1824, L. Riedel s.n. (holotype: LE) .

Distribution and habitat: — Brazil (Minas Gerais, in the southern portion of the Espinhaço Range, from Belo Horizonte to Diamantina ). Campo rupestre; 900–1450 m.

Taxonomic Notes: —A species best recognized by its glaucous leaves and abaxial secondary veins and midvein osbscured by a persistent villous indument. Similar to L. pohlii but the leaves of the latter have evident glabrous midveins, which are winged and flattened (vs. semicylindric to quadrangulate). It can be confused with L. staavioides , which differs from L. gardneri by having a leaf apex rounded to ermaginate with a trichome tuft exceeding the apex (vs. obtuse to acute without a trichome tuft exceeding the apex). Also similar to L. rosmarinifolia Martius (1822: 155) : see that species for a discussion of the differences. As noted by Semir (1991), the samples on Gardner n° 4829 are a mixture of two different species, L. gardneri Sch. Bip. and L. pohlii Sch. Bip. , which grow sympatrically. The following sheets of Gardner 4829 are samples of L. pohlii : BM000939727, G00300661, GH00009907, NY01239475, P02511927, P02511928 and US 00147441. The sheet at K is composed of two different branches, the upper one is a sample of L. pohlii and the lower one of L. gardneri . The sheets at E, R and G00300539 have not been examined. The choice of the lectotype follows Semir (1991) (cited as holotype).
