1. Maschalostachys markgrafii (Barroso) Loeuille & Roque (2017: 38) View in CoL . Lychnophora markgrafii Barroso (1956: 260) , as “ markgravii ”. Type:— BRAZIL. Minas Gerais: Serra de Grão Mogol, planalto, ca. 1000 m, 12 November 1938, F. Markgraf 3480 (lectotype: RB [RB00650557], designated here; isolectotype: RB [RB00651285]) ( Fig. 31 A–B View FIGURE 31 ).

Distribution and habitat: — Brazil (Minas Gerais, restricted to the northern portion of the Espinhaço Range of mountains). Caatinga rupestre and campo rupestre; 670–1205 m.

Taxonomic Notes: —This species is especially common in Serra of Grão-Mogol ( Hind 2003) and in Serra do Cabral ( Hatschbach et al. 2006). In Grão-Mogol, its local abundance and peculiar architecture turns it a remarkable component of the vegetation. Maschalostachys markgrafii differs from M. mellosilvae Loeuille & Roque (2017: 42) by the spikes of syncephalia organized in a panicle (vs. organized in a loose unbranched spikes or rarely in a cyme), syncephalium surrounded by spatulate leafy secondary bracts (vs. absent), number and apices of subinvolucral bracts per head (one bract with erect or slightly coiled upward apex vs. 5–6 with circinate apices), the degree of head fusion (slightly appressed at base vs. heads fused in 1/4 to 1/2 of their length), foveolate receptacle (vs. fimbrillate) and number of florets per head (4–5 vs. 12–23).

Since the multiple sheet preparation was not indicated either by Barroso (1956) or by labels on the type material and one of the sheet (RB00651285) has no labelling (except the accession number), a lectotype has been chosen (RB00650557).
