Maruina (Aculcina) roraimensis sp. nov.

Diagnosis. Combination of the following characters: antenna with 13 flagellomeres; abdominal sternite 3 with internal sclerotized nodule, sternites 4–7 with sclerotized bands, sternite 8 with a pair of tufts of setae; male gonocoxite with approximately 50 setae on dorsolateral surface; aedeagus with a group of many long and slender spines and a dorsal group of short hooked spines, seen in lateral view; epandrial posterior margin strongly sclerotized forming a well delimited bar similar to the subepandrial sclerite.

Description. Male. Head ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 4–8 ): vertex pilose, with narrow glabrous area on midline; eyes contiguous, eye bridge with three facet rows; frons with two triangular patches of setae; antenna with scape little longer than pedicel, 13 flagellomeres, flagellomeres 1–3 without ascoids, ascoids present on apical third of flagellomeres 4–11 ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 4–8 ); segments of palp, mainly 2 nd, 3 rd and 4 th widened; palpus formula: 1.0:1.3:1.4:2.3. Wing ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 4–8 ): length 1,80 mm, maximum width 0,446 mm, anterior margin of C continuous from level of base of Sc; R 1, R 2+3, R 4, R 5, M 1, M 3, M 4 and CuA free at base of wing, R 3 connected to R 2, R 5 weakly sclerotized on apex, M 2 separated from M 3. Abdomen ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 4–8 ): sternite 3 with internal sclerotized nodule, sternites 4–7 with cross sclerotized chitinous bands, sternite 8 with a pair of tufts of setae. Terminalia ( Figs. 9–12 View FIGURES 9–14 ): hypandrium well sclerotized; gonocoxite with approximately 50 setae on dorsolateral surface, gonostylus shorter than gonocoxite, with setiform setae concentrated at base and with rounded apex; aedeagal sheath membranous, with an apical sclerotized dorsal arc which seems to guide aedeagal spines; ejaculatory apodeme pyriform; aedeagus with median aedeagal spines larger in length than the gonocoxite, with gradually shorter spines laterally and with a group of short and hooked spines dorsally; epandrium with single small aperture centrally and posterior margin concave, strongly sclerotized, forming a concave bar that articulates with the epandrial appendage; subepandrial sclerite V-shaped, anterior portion where the two arms meet is rounded, apex of arms expanded and articulating with the epandrial appendage; epandrial appendage wider at base, tapering to the apex, with many scamiform setae throughout its length and an apical clavate tenaculum; epiproct with short projection medially; hypoproct with convex posterior margin.

Female. Similar to male except: segments of palp, mainly 2nd, 3rd and 4th not as wide as in males ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 4–8 ), palpus formula: 1.0:1.3:1.3:2.3. Wing: length 1.72 mm, maximum width 0.426 mm. Abdomen: without sclerotized chitinous bands or nodules on sternites. Terminalia ( Fig. 13–14 View FIGURES 9–14 ): hypogynium wider basally, hypogynial valve bilobate with approximately eight setae on each lobe; internal lateral bristles projecting directly from surface of hypogynium; spermathecal complex little longer than hypogynium.

Material. Holotype ♂, BRAZIL, Roraima, Amajari, Serra Tepequém , 10–12.vi.2010, malaise, col. J. A. Rafael; F. F. Xavier; R. Machado; R. Freitas ( INPA); paratypes: 4 ♀ 13 ♂ same data.

Etymology. The epithet roraimensis is based on the type locality and is also a reference for the first record of Maruina in the state of Roraima.

Distribution. Known only from type locality, Roraima ( Brazil).

Holotype condition. Slide mounted, dissected, head, thorax and abdomen under one cover slip, one wing under another cover slip (one wing lost), both antennae and palpi complete, terminalia in dorso-ventral view.

Remarks. Different morphologies of aedeagal spines can be seen in the aedeagus of this species, mainly when the aedeagal spines are protruded ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 9–14 ). In the retracted position ( Fig. 10–11 View FIGURES 9–14 ) all spines are packed together, thus one may not notice the different types of spines. This species has a sexual dimorphism in the width of palp segments, which are wider in males than in females, a character also observed in Maruina (Aculcina) chiringa Hogue, 1990 . M. (A.) roraimensis , M. mucugensis and M. guria are the only known species of Maruina with contiguous eyes, but M. roraimensis is differentiated by the presence of spines on the aedeagus, which are lacking in the other two and also in M. (A.) chiringa .
