Metaparia hybrida ( Jacoby, 1881) ( Figs. 2d View Fig , 20–24 View Figs )
Spintherophyta hybrida Jacoby 1881: 122 . Spintherophyta hybrida : Lefèvre 1885: 6. Metaparia hybrida : Flowers 1996: 41 [species transferred to Metaparia View in CoL ].
Type Specimens. Holotype by monotypy, male pinned to a card: labeled “Type [circular label outlined in red]//Aceituno,/ Guatemala./Champion.//B. C. A./122. 3.// Spintherophyta /hybrida/Jacoby. [label handwritten on blue paper]//3. Spintherophyta hybrida .”; deposited in the BMNH.
Redescription. Body elongate-oval, dorsum convex ( Figs. 20, 21 View Figs ). Length 2.96–3.66 mm (males) or 3.70 mm (females). Width 1.74–2.24 mm (males) or 2.13 mm (females). Dorsum deep purple, almost black, shining. Venter dark shining green. Appendages red-brown, legs with slight sheen. Head: IOR 2.14–2.5 (males) or 1.94 (females). Frons punctate-setose, space between punctures microsculptured; punctures medium, medium dense; setae short. Clypeus punctate-setose, space between punctures microsculptured at base, form trapezoidal, apical 1/4 suddenly narrowed, apex weakly emarginate ( Fig. 22 View Figs ); punctures medium, coarse, dense; setae longer apically; apical emargination very shallow, broad. Labrum colored like head. Mandibles enlarged, lateral face convex, dorsal face with low basal ridge, inner edge of right mandible with small tooth (males) or mandibles not enlarged, lateral face weakly convex, dorsal face smooth (females). Lateral face punctate-setose, colored like head except apical teeth red-brown; punctures streatched longitudinally. Antennomere 1 globular. Antennomeres 7–10 longer than wide, weakly flattened, widest apically. Pronotum: Pronotal ratio 0.60–0.62 (males) or 0.63 (females). Disc glabrous, finely punctate, space between punctures smooth; punctures medium, dense. Anterior edge with anteriorly directed setae. Anterior corners strongly deflexed. Sides evenly rounded. Posterior edge weakly dentate, margined with a subbasal bead and row of punctures. Scutellar shield: Form pentagonal, corners rounded, disc glabrous, smooth. Elytra: Disc subrugulose basally, punctate-striate, space between punctures smooth; striae indistinct basally, more distinct apically; punctures medium sized, dense, coarse basally, finer apically. Basal calli smooth, impunctate. Sublateral costae smooth, subapical costae between striae weak to strong. Venter: Prosternal lateral arms narrow, not produced anteriorly, connecting to pronotal anterior edge, sparsely setose ( Fig. 2d View Fig ). Prosternum hourglass-shaped, disc sparsely setose and weakly convex, edges margined with bead; anterior edge straight; sides concave; posterior edge straight, lateral lobes short, rounded. Legs: Legs entirely red-brown, trochanters with primary seta. Aedeagus: Basal hood ca. 0.5× the length of the median lobe. Median lobe broadly arched, apex weakly expand- ed, emarginate, endophallic opening reaching emargination; emargination broadly V-shaped to arched ( Figs. 23, 24 View Figs ). Spermatheca: Unknown.
Diagnosis. Metaparia hybrida is most easily confused with M. cephalotes . The two can be distinguished by the deflexed pronotal anterior corners, coarse punctation, apical emargination of the median lobe arched to broadly V-shaped, and endophallic opening reaching the apical emargination in M. hybrida . Metaparia hybrida can be separated from all other species of Metaparia by its weak to absent clypeal emargination.
Specimens Examined. 5 specimens deposited in the EGRC, NMNH, and TAMU. GUATEMALA: Baja Verapaz: 16 km N. Salama (1 EGRC) ; San Geronimo (2 NMNH) . MEXICO: Chiapas: turnoff to Tuxtla Guitz.Airport (1 TAMU) ; Ruinas Chincultic (1 EGRC) .
Distribution. Guatemala (Baja Verapaz), Mexico (Chiapas) ( Fig. 71 View Figs ).
Temporal Occurrence. May, June, November.
