Dactuliothrips malloi Tapia, 1953: 77 View in CoL

Body, legs, and antennae dark brown ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 12 – 28 ); fore wings light brown. Head relatively long with two pairs of short postocular setae and without microtrichia ( Fig. 24 View FIGURES 12 – 28 ). Pronotum with developed major setae, with about three pairs on anterior margin and three pairs on posterior margin ( Fig. 32 View FIGURES 29 – 36 ). Mesonotum without microtrichia. Metanotum with one pair of setae on anterior margin, arcuate sculpture and with few microtrichia on median anterior area. Fore femur with 4–9 spurs on inner margin. Tibiae on inner side with two large and distinct claws, bearing short setae ( Fig. 75 View FIGURES 63 – 81 ). Abdominal sternites with about 18 discal setae in an irregular arrangement ( Fig. 46 View FIGURES 37 – 48 ); sternite VII with three pairs of posteromarginal setae and two similarly-sized pairs of supernumerary setae ( Fig. 50 View FIGURES 49 – 62 ). Male abdominal tergite I with paired longitudinal ridges reaching anterior margin of the tergite.

This species was collected in Argentina in three different localities, Buenos Aires, Tucumán, and Chaco, on Modiolastrum malvifolium (Malvaceae) (De Santis et al. 1980); and in Mendoza on Sphaeralcea miniata (Malvaceae) and Malvella leprosa (Malvaceae) (de Borbón 2005).

Material examined. Argentina, Buenos Aires, Las Breñas, 2 females, 1 male paratypes, on Malvaceae , viii.1950 (E. Tapia). Tucumán, Horco Molle, 4 females, 1 male, on Mediolastrum malvifolium , 7.xi.1960 (L. De Santis). Mendoza, Los Corralitos, 11 females, 1 male, on Sphaeralcea miniata , 5.xi.2001 (C. de Borbón); 3 females, 1 male, 17.xi.2001, same place, host and collector; El Pastal, 3 females, 2 males, on Malvella leprosa , 25.x.2004 (C. de Borbón).
