Type locality. Turkey: Hatay, Kılıç Dağı. Lectotype: male ( MHNG), here designated.
Material examined. TURKEY: “N. Syrien ”, Djebel Akra [now Kılıç Dağı in Turkey], 6.1885, 4♂ (Paralectotypes) (leg. F. Leuthner) ( MfN) ; [Turkey], “N.W. Syria ”, Mt. Cassius [ Kılıç Dağı ], 12.5.1945, 1♂, 2♀ (leg. K. P. Whitehorn) (det. Massa) ( NHMUK) ( Massa & Fontana 2007) ; SYRIA: Syria, Latakia, 1♂, 1♀ ( MNCN) ; Chrenberg , nr. 2062, 2♀ ( MfN) ; Latakia, 1♂ (Paralectotype) ; Angora, Wid., nr. 2063, 1♀ ( MfN); N . Syrien, Lâdikiye [Latakia], 5.1885, 3♂, 3♀ (Paralectotypes) (leg. Leuthner) ( NMW) ; LEBANON: Tripoli, Djebel Matrafe , 13.7.1934, 1♀ (det. Uvarov, 1936 as Prionosthenus brunnerianus Sauss. ) (det. Fishelson, 1957 as Ocneropsis brunneriana Sauss. from Tripoli) ( NMNHI) .
Remarks. This species is very similar to Prionosthenus gueleni Karabağ. Their male phallic complexes are very similar. The generic separation is not easy. One female collected by Whitehorn from Mt. Cassius (now in Turkey) was identified by Dirsh (1950) as Prionosthenus galericulatus (see P. gueleni above), 1 male and 2 females of the same population were identified by Dirsh (Dirsh 1950: 68) as “ Ocneropsis syriacus (Bris.) ” and by Massa (Massa & Fontana 2007: 51) as this species (see Material examined above). It seems that while the specimens found at low altitudes have more raised pronotum and abdominal tergites, the specimens found in the highlands have lower pronotum and abdominal tergites. I think new field studies are necessary to elucidate their generic and specific positions (see also the Remarks section of Prionosthenus syriacus (Brisout de Barneville, 1854) .
The type locality of this species is given in original description ( Saussure 1887: 76) as “Syria septentrionalis” (Northern Syria). Syntypes were collected from several locations. Therefore I have designated the only male, without right middle leg, labelled as “Syrie sept.” in the MHNG as lectotype (see Hollier 2012: 308). Additional data may be seen in the label of the specimens of syntypes preserved in the MfN which are very probably a part of specimens collected from the locality of lectotype by Dr. F. Leuthner. Therefore Djebel Akra [Kılıç Dağ] is the type locality of this species. This location, Kılıç Dağı (=Keldağ=Cebel Akra=Djebel Akra=Mt. Cassius), is now in Hatay Province of Turkey. The paralectotypes are in the MHNG, NMW and MfN (see Material examined above and Hollier 2012).
One female preserved in the MfN was labelled as “Angora” [Ankara, N. of central Turkey], but the label must be wrong. It was also marked with the number “2063”. Two more females in the same collection from Chrenberg have the number “2062”, and probably came from the same or close localities in Syria.
