Diagnosis. Paraspicera bakeri has the scutellar spine longer ( Fig 1a View FIGURE 1 ) than P.brandaoi (around 1/2 the length of scutellar disk) ( Fig 2a View FIGURE 2 ). In P. bakeri the scutellar foveae are small and delimited posteriorly ( Fig 1a View FIGURE 1 ), whereas in P. brandaoi they are large and not delimited posteriorly ( Fig 2a View FIGURE 2 ). Furthermore, the interfoveal line in P. brandaoi is present, but not very pronounced in the scutellar disk, whereas in P. bakeri this character is prominent.

Redescription. Length. Males: 3.4–3.9 mm (n=49); females: 3.4–3.9 mm (n=6).

Coloration. Head black. Antennae light chestnut except scape and pedicel which sometimes are blackish. Mesosoma black. Legs light chestnut except coxae, which can be dark chestnut. Metasoma dark chestnut. Wing venation light chestnut.

Head. Frons coriaceous, with thin longitudinal carinae or slightly rugose; frontal lateral carina straight or slightly curved, sometimes not conspicuous adjacent to ocelli. Vertex dorsally coriaceous, sometimes rugose, posteriorly with many conspicuous longitudinal carinae. Occiput with many transverse carinae. Genae transversally carinate and coriaceous.

Antenna. MALE: filiform; F1 distinctly modified; antennal formula: 5(4): 2(2): 8(3): 7(3): 7(3): 6.5(3): 6(3): 6(3): 5(2): 5(2): 5(2): 5(2): 5(2): 8(2). FEMALE: filiform, antennal formula: 4(3): 2(2): 6(2): 5(2): 4(2): 4(2): 4(2): 4(2): 4(2): 4(2): 4(2): 4(2): 9(2).

Mesosoma. Lateral areas of pronotum coriaceous, sometimes with piliferous points next to dorsal margin. Dorsal margin of pronotal plate concave. Scutum coriaceous or coriaceous/rugose, sometimes with points in posterior half next to notauli; in some specimens small transverse carinae posteriorly between notauli can be present. Anteroadmedial lines parallel, conspicuous, reaching 1/3 length of scutum. Median line conspicuous or weak, reaching dorsal margin of mesoscutal sulcus. Notauli narrow, slightly wider in posterior half, with weak transverse strigae. Mesoscutal sulcus reaching 1/3–1/2 length of scutum, with faint transverse strigae, sometimes difficult to see. Scutellum 0.95–1.12 length of scutum; scutellar foveae small; lateral bars very wide, strongly delimited posteriorly, shiny and with longitudinal carinae more conspicuous in centre than on sides. Scutellar disk coriaceous, with many strong longitudinal carinae beginning at posterior margin of scutellar foveae and reaching posterior margin of scutellar disk; interfoveal carina extending conspicuously along scutellar disk. In lateral view scutellar disk is on same plane as scutellar spine, or slightly below base of the spine; spine straight or strongly bent downwards. Scutellar spine long, around 1/2 length of scutellar disk.

Wings. Hyaline. Radial cell 1.9–2.1 as long as wide. R1 vein straight anteriorly, curved next to wing margin. R2 vein short but sometimes a nebulous towards wing margin.

Distribution. Nearctic: USA (Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, Maryland, Utah and Virginia) and Canada (New Brunswick, Ontario and Quebec). Recorded for the first time from Canada.
