13. Pavonia varians Moricand (1841: 122) View in CoL ( Figures 2 View FIGURE 2 , 5h, 6g).
Lectotype (designated here):— BRAZIL. J.S. Near “ Japira ”[Jacobina], Blanchet 3148 ( P barcode 02285810 ! [digital image]; isolectotypes ( P barcode P02285811 ! [digital image], F barcode 0063036F! [digital image], F barcode 0063037F! [digital image], KW barcode 001000218! [digital image], NY barcode 00038476! [digital image])
Nomenclatural notes: — The protologue contains information about the location ( Hab. In Brasilia prope Japira in dumetis) and the collector ( Blanchet 3148). However , does not inform the herbarium where the sample was deposited. Moricand has worked at herbarium G, but no specimens were found for this herbarium. (Stafleu & Cowan 1981). For this collection, six records were found ( KW001000218 , P02285810 , P02285811 , F0063037 F, NY00038476 , and F0063036 F), that corresponded to syntypes ( Turland et al. 2018; Art. X of the ICN). The specimen P ( P02285810 ) is the more representative, therefore was chosen as lectotype.
Taxonomic notes: —The important characteristics are the leaves 3‒5-lobed (central lobe 1.1‒6.2 × 0.8‒6.5 cm, lateral lobes 0.7‒4.3 × 0.5‒2.1 cm, palmately) with crenate margins and the epicalyx with eight filiform bracteoles, smaller than the calyx (1.2‒1.6 cm long) on length. Furthermore, this species is the subshrub to shrub with branches velutinous. The morphology of the mericarps (3-rostrate) is shared with P. martii , but the two species are differentiated for the leaves (3‒5-lobed and palmately in P. varians and unlobed, ovate, and reduced size in P. martii ).
Distribution, habitat, and IUCN threat status: —Species endemic of the phytogeographic domain of Caatinga from the Brazilian Northeast. It is registered in Bahia, Ceará, Pernambuco, and Piauí states (Flora e Funga do Brasil, 2022). In Pernambuco it is recorded in six municipalities in the Caatinga Zone in Agreste, Sertão Central and Sertão dos Chapadões Areníticos. Occurs in the Parque Nacional do Catimbau and in Área de Proteção Ambiental da Chapada do Araripe. P. varians has an EOO of 520,968.857 Km² and an AOO of 296.000 Km². This species is here considered Least Concern (LC) because it has a larger distribution and does not present plausible threats.
Phenology: —Collected with flowers from January to April, and from June to December, and with fruits in January, May, September, and October.
