6. Piptolepis imbricata (Gardner) Schultz-Bipontinus (1863: 383) View in CoL . Vernonia imbricata Gardner (1846: 209) . Type:— BRAZIL. Minas Gerais: bushy places on the Serro do Frio, near Milho Verde, August 1840, G. Gardner 4751 (lectotype: BM e! [BM000939726], designated here; isolectotypes: B †, K e! [K000484686, K000484687], NY [NY00274851]).

Distribution and habitat: — Brazil (Minas Gerais, endemic to the Diamantina Plateau). Campo rupestre; 1000–1300 m.

Taxonomic notes: —A rarely collected species. Distinctive features are the combination of cypselae with glabrous furrows and outer pappus shorter than inner series. It can be confused with Piptolepis leptospermoides , but the latter species has smaller leaves (5–6 vs. 6–8 mm long), which are conspicuoulsy ascending (vs. patent to ascending), and pilose cypsela furrows.
