Plekocheilus (Aeropictus) quadricolor (Pfeiffer, 1848)

( Figs 5 View FIGURE 5 X–AA)

Bulimus quadricolor Pfeiffer 1848a: 229 View in CoL . Type locality: Venezuela, Edo. Mérida, Chachopo. Lectotype BMNH 1975283 ( Breure 1978). Plekocheilus quadricolor (Pfeiffer) ; Richardson 1995: 324 (references only).

Material. Venezuela, Mérida, Chachopo: BMNH 1975283, BMNH 1975284/2 (paralectotypes); Nevados, 3000 m, Gabaldón leg./1903: USNM 109525; Sierra Nevada mountains, 6000 ft [~ 1800 m], Gabaldon & sons leg.: USNM 206483.

Altitudinal range. The localities reported comprise a range of 1800–3000 m.

Remarks. This species is more elongated than P. veranyi , with which it is sympatric. The lectotype is nearly devoid of the ‘air pockets’ typical for Aeropictus and looks at first glance more like some Eurytus species (e.g. P. (E.) juliani Haas, 1955 from Venezuelan Guayana; see Breure 2009). However, the paralectotypes show these ‘air pockets’ more strongly. The Colombian reference to this species by Abbott (1989: 95) is probably an error.
