Bilyjomyia Niitsuma and Watson (2009) View in CoL

The original description of Bilyjomyia algens by Coquillett (1902) in the genus Tanypus was based on a female collected on July 6 from Popof Island in the Aleutian Islands. Roback (1971) transferred the species into the genus/ subgenus Psectrotanypus (Apsectrotanypus) . Roback (1984) described the pupa from a small stream on Kodiak Island, collected in July of 1982. The larvae were later discovered in small spring pools and small streams in the western United States ( Watson 1999). Watson (1999) noted that larval characteristics suggest its placement in a new genus. Niitsuma and Watson (2009) erected Bilyjomyia for the western North American and Japanese species. They noted it fit the pattern of dispersal of other Chironomidae genera across the Bering Land Bridge.
