Saccocera panaras sp. nov.
( Figs 6 View FIGURES 1 – 8 , 15 View FIGURES 15 – 17 )
Holotype: Ƥ [ Papua New Guinea] “New Ireland, XI.–XII.23., A. F. Eichhorn / Meyrick Coll. B.M. 1938-290. / resumptana Walk [sic] / Sagalassa 1/1 SpS. E Meyrick det., in Meyrick Coll.” (BMNH).
Etymology. This species is named after the pre-melanesian tribe of native people of New Ireland, the Panaras .
Description (holotype, female, Fig. 6 View FIGURES 1 – 8 ). Alar expanse 22.5 mm, body 11.0 mm. Head: [missing in type specimen]. Thorax: shiny blackish brown throughout. Abdomen: dark fuscous to brownish black; sternites with relatively broad, tergites with narrow dirty pale yellow posterior margins, last segment uniform. Forewing: dark brown, scattered with individual pale yellow scales, with a patch of yellow scales at about 2/3 just below midline and patch of yellow near base of posterior margin; ventral side similar, with small subbasal yellow patch and yellow streak in distal part of cell, the latter connected to yellow patch extending from cell to posterior margin. Hindwing: black, with large yellow area in centre and smaller yellow patch closer to anal margin; fringe yellow, except from apex and anal margin; ventral side similar but yellow more extensive.
Genitalia. Female (AK703 / BMNH32392, Fig. 15 View FIGURES 15 – 17 ). As described for genus. Ovipositor short and wide, triangular pouch relatively large, corpus bursae small and simple, ostium and antrum wide and well sclerotized.
Diagnosis. This species is similar to Saccocera miangkabau sp. nov. and Saccocera sauteri (Kallies 2004) . From S. sauteri it can be distinguished by its larger size, the more extensive yellow markings on the hindwing, and the details of the ostium (protruding in S. sauteri ). From S. miangkabau sp. nov. it can be distinguished by its smaller size, the less extensive yellow markings on the hindwing, and the details of the female genitalia morphology, in particular the base of apophyses.
