14. Senecio ferrugineus (Klatt) Cuatrecasas (1950: 44) View in CoL . Culcitium ferrugineum Klatt (1894: 363) . Type:—[ ECUADOR] ‘ Chimborazo, juxta limitem nives perpetuae, misit. Francis Hall [s.n.], Mus. Bot. Berol.’ (holotype: B †, photo F

0BN018143!; lectotype: GH 00012127 ! fragments and drawing, designated here). Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 .

Distribution and Habitat ( Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 ): — Senecio ferrugineus is endemic to superpáramo of Volcán Chimborazo, Ecuador, at elevations of 4600–4900 m.

Note: — Nordenstam (1999) considered Senecio ferrugineus as a synonym of Senecio canescens (= Culcitium rufescens ); after examining the protologues, type material and general materials of both species, it is clear that they are different: Senecio canescens is a robust herb, 40–60 cm tall, with 2–9 capitula, more than 4 cm diameter, while S. ferrugineu s is a weak herb, 15 cm tall, with a single nodding capitulum, 3 cm in diameter.

In the protologue of Culcitium ferrugineus Klatt stated: ‘ Chimborazo, juxta limitem nives perpetuae, misit. Francis Hall, Mus. Bot. Berol’. Although the type material deposited in B was destroyed, we have located a photograph in F (0BN018143) and fragments of the type (leaves and flowers) accompanied by an illustration and a copy of the original diagnosis with the stamp of Dr. Klatt Herbarium in GH. We have designated GH 00012127 as lectotype because it fully agrees with the protologue of the species.
