Figs 7 View FIGURE 7 , 8 View FIGURE 8
Scalpellum pentacrinarum Pilsbry, 1907: 55 –57, fig. 20.
Trianguloscalpellum pentacrinarum Zevina, 1981: 296 –297, fig. 223.— Ortiz et al., 2002: 93, fig. 5D.
Material examined. Holotype. USNM 32870; National Museum of Natural History. Collected I/17–20/1885 off Havana, Cuba, between 23°10'30''N, 82°20'28''W and 23°10'40''N, 82°20'15''W, St 2319-2350, “Albatross”. Depth 60– 510 m. On a cirrus of Neocrinus decorus ( Thomson, 1864) (Echinodermata: Crinoidea: Isocrinida : Isocrinidae ).
Remarks. Host established from Clark, 1921: 638.
Supplementary material. Two specimens, both damaged. MCZ USA CRU 7582; Museum of Comparative Zoology, USA. Collected near Puerto Rico, off southern coast, Greater Antilles. Depth 1220 m. Specimen attached to N. decorus ; fragments of scalpellid peduncles located in the junction between brachial and pinnula.
One specimen. NHM UK 1885.6.1.1; Natural History Museum, London. Collected off Barbados, US CSS Blake Expeditions, St 28. Depth 360 m. Presented by A. Agassiz. On a stalk of Neocrinus blakei ( Carpenter, 1884) (Echinodermata: Crinoidea: Isocrinida : Isocrinidae ).
Remarks. Collector and station number established from Clark et al. (1921).
Three adults and two juveniles. NHM UK 1884.6.20.5; Natural History Museum, London. Collected between Saba and Eustatius Islands. Depth 971 m. Collector “Investigator”. Purchased from Capitan Cole. On cirri and stalk of N. decorus .
Remarks. Depth and collector established from Carpenter (1884).
Distribution and habitat. Caribbean Sea: Antillies. Depth 60–1220 m. Associated with N. decorus and N. blakei .
Original description. Pilsbry (1907) gave a very detailed and precise description of this species. Only a few details need to be added to his account.
Supplementary description of holotype ( Fig. 7 View FIGURE 7 ). Capitulum with narrow space between upper part of C and carinal margin of T chitin-filled; CL slightly convexly thickened; L2 having pink hue, junction between L2 and CL and other capitular plates without visible chitin. Rostral ends of RLs slightly overlapping asymmetrically above and below “lanceolate” space normally occupied by rostrum. Space not “bridged with yellowish chitin” as described by Pilsbry (1907), but rather looked white, harder in structure than chitin, as though occupied by a calcareous rostrum. In the additional material, R is conspicuous ( Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 ).
Peduncle twisted at ~ 180°, bent towards host, plates with distal part curved upward, organised in 6 tiers (r-rlcl-c) each ~ 15 plates high; tiers becoming clearly distinct in upper half where less crowded.
Notes on supplementary material ( Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 , a–d). External and internal observation on adult from lot NHM UK 1884.6.20.5: total length 13.0 mm. Eggs found internally. Externally, L2 ankylosed with CL along full height of rostral margin of CL, suture conspicuous, replicating shape of CL margin. Internally, L2 darker in color than surrounding plates, suture with CL conspicuous. CL and L2 separated when soaked in bleach. Peduncular plates in 7 tiers (c-cl-l-rl) ~ 11 plates high, on rostral side 7 plates high.
External observation on juvenile from lot NHM UK 1884.6.20.5: length 6.0 mm. All plates white, except light brown L2, color difference likely due to presence of chitin. L2 ankylosed with CL along full height of rostral margin of CL. Peduncular plates in distinct c, cl, l tiers ~ 9 plates high, whereas both rl tiers on rostral side only two plates high.
