Holotype:— ANSP G.C. 20068

Type locality: —Gab Gab Beach, Guam (13° 25.57’ N, 144 °38.57’ E)
Material studied: —Wild and cultured ( HK 363) material isolated from the original collection: ECT 3569, epiphytes on macrophytes growing on coral reefs off Gab Gab Beach, Guam, USA (13° 25.57’ N, 144 °38.57’ E).
Description: —Valves observed were 88.2–152.4 μm in length and 5.0–9.9 μm in width, and lanceolate in outline with margins that were continuously weakly convex from the center to the ends of the valve ( Figs 95–98 View FIGURES 95, 96 View FIGURES 97, 98 ). Each sternum was evenly thin for the length of the valve. The virgae spacing was relatively coarse at 38–41 per 10 μm. There were two rows of fine pores between virgae visible in the SEM. Each valve had two rimoportulae, one at each pole, with symmetrical covers arranged oblique to the transapical axis. Each rimoportula was about 2.3–2.9 μm from the end of the valve. Ocellulimbi were 10–14 pores wide and 7–9 pores tall, deeply sunken with only one spine above each ( Fig. 96 View FIGURES 95, 96 ). Ocellulimbi pores were relatively coarsely packed at 4.5–5.6 per 1 μm. The valve was bilayered, with a single pore internally at the junction of the face and mantle. Girdle bands were without pores and open.
Remarks: —This species co-occurred with and was easy to confuse with S. cardinalii . See further comments below.
Etymology: —This species was named in remembrance of Paul J. Harrison, Canadian phycologist and coauthor with Lobban of books on seaweed physiology and ecology.
