( Figs. 14−17 View FIGURES 14 − 19 , 20−21 View FIGURES 20 − 23 , 28 View FIGURES 24 − 28 , 34 View FIGURE 29 − 35 )
Wollastoniella rotunda Yasunaga & Miyamoto, 1993: 227 (n. sp.); Yamada et al. (2010a: 206) (diag., desc. of female genitalia). Several additional works are available on its ecology.
Type material examined. Thailand: 1 Ƌ, Chiang Mai: Mae Rim (Mae Raem), Muang Kaew , 9 Feb 1988, Y. Hirose (holotype, USNM) ; 1 ♂, Tak, Thoen, Bang Mae Wa , eggplant, 17º33' N 99º13' E, 28.i.1992, F.D. Benett & R.M. Baranowsky ( AMNH _PBI 00380434) (paratype, TYCN) GoogleMaps ; 3 ♂♂ 3 ♀♀, same data (paratypes, TYCN) GoogleMaps ; 1 ♀, Chiang Mai, Mae Taeng, Khi Lek , eggplant, 19º04'N, 98º54'E, 16.ii.1988, Y. Hirose, (00380435) (paratype, TYCN) GoogleMaps ; 2 ♂♂ 2 ♀♀, Mae Raem, Muang Kaew , eggplant, 9.ii.1988, Y. Hirose (paratypes, TYCN) .
Diagnosis. Recognized by its almost totally fuscous, small, circular body; shiny dorsal surface with rather sparsely distributed, silky, semi-erect setae; fuscous head with apically reddish clypeus; antennae almost wholly creamy yellow with segments III and IV usually reddish; coarsely and rather densely punctate pronotum with narrowly lamellate lateral margins; rounded, narrowly lamellate hemelytral exocorium; paramere distinctly twisted, with cone bearing a thin dorsal projection at middle and a dorsal reflexed flap at base of slender, apically recurved flagellum ( Figs. 28 View FIGURES 24 − 28 , 34 View FIGURE 29 − 35 ); and female copulatory tube short ( Fig. 34 View FIGURE 29 − 35 ). See Yamada et al. (2010) for further diagnostic characters. Fifth instar nymph ( Fig. 17 View FIGURES 14 − 19 ): recognized by its rounded, tortoise-shaped body; shiny chestnut-brown basic coloration (except for pale reddish or yellowish brown vertex, frons and lateral margins of wing pads); sparse, simple vestiture on dorsum; and almost totally yellow antennae and legs.
Remarks. This species has been regarded as a potential candidate for biological control against tiny economically important arthropods, such as Thrips palmi Karny, 1925 (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) and Tetranychus kanzawai Kishida, 1927 (Acari: Tetranychidae) ( Uefune et al. 2010, Nagai et al. 2013). In Myanmar, both the adults and late immature forms were observed to co-exist with a typhlocybine leafhopper (Cicadellidae: Typhlocybinae) and a tingid, Haedus sp. ( Tingidae : Tinginae ), on Urena lobata L. (Malvaceae) ( Figs. 14, 18−19 View FIGURES 14 − 19 ), where the leaves were heavily damaged by aggregations of the leafhopper and tingid ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 14 − 19 ); Wollastoniella rotunda is assumed to prey on both or one of them.
