Allantus temulus var. scutellatus Mocsáry, 1909

A valid species, Tenthredo (Temuledo) scutellata (Mocsáry, 1909) .

TYPES. Allantus temulus var. scutellatus Mocsáry, 1909: 22 . Syntypes Ƥ, “Sibiria orientalis: Raddefka.” Lectotype Ƥ, hereby designated ( Fig. 36 View FIGURE 36 ). Type locality: “Sibiria or. Raddefka” [= Russia: Birobidzan: Radde].

DISCUSSION. In the collection of the HNHM three Ƥ syntypes were found. One of these is hereby selected as lectotype, the 2Ƥ paralectotypes have the same data. The species is very close to T. babai Takeuchi, 1936 and T. temula Scopoli, 1763 . These taxa may be separated as follows:

1. Eyes strongly converging in frontal view, distance between lower corners about 0.8 times as long as the 3rd antennomere; sculpture of mesopleura variable, but usually shiny on upper part. [ Hind tibia black with basal third (or more) yellow, hind trochanters mainly yellow; scutellum (except for in eastern Mediterranean specimens) black; clypeus usually completely yellow; 5th tergite usually pale ventrally; apical part of fore wing slightly infuscated.] ( Tenthredo temula Scopoli s.l., perhaps the “varieties” partly represent valid taxa)......................................................................... 3

- Eyes less converging, distance between lower corners about 1.1–1.3 times as long as the 3rd antennomere; mesopleura rugulose on upper part. [The variability in the sculpture of these species overlaps with temula s.l.]......................... 2

2. Hind tibia black with yellow markings on the ventral side, hind trochanters mainly black; scutellum mainly yellow; clypeus largely black medially, often only lateral edges of clypeus yellow; 5th tergite black; apical part of fore wing slightly infuscated. (Eastern Siberia, Ussuri)................................................. Tenthredo scutellata (Mocsáry, 1909)

- Hind tibia black with basal third (or more) yellow, hind trochanters yellow; scutellum black (at most with small yellowish brown apex); clypeus usually completely yellow; 5th tergite usually pale ventrally; fore wing distinctly infuscated in lower part of radial cells, cubital (radiomedial) cells and upper part of second discoidal (mediocubital) cell. [The species looks very much like temula but differs in the less converging eyes and the distinctly darkened apex of fore wing.] ( Japan)........................................................................................... Tenthredo babai Takeuchi, 1936

3. Scutellum mainly yellow. (Caucasus)................................ Tenthredo temula var. xanthaspis Enslin, 1920

- Scutellum black...................................................................................... 4

4. 7th tergite largely yellow, often also 6th tergite marked with yellow. ( Britain, SW France, N Spain, Italy).................................................................................. Tenthredo temula var. celtica Benson, 1953

- 7th tergite usually black or with small yellow mark; 6th tergite black............................................ 5

5. 3rd tergite usually yellow, 4th yellow only laterally (rarely completely yellow); wings slightly yellowish brown tinged. (Western Palaearctic—except Britain, SW France, N Spain, Italy and Caucasus)............... Tenthredo temula Scopoli, 1763

- 3rd tergite usually distinctly black marked on anterior margin, 4th tergite yellow laterally, but usually also with narrow yellow hind margin; wings slightly grey tinged. (Eastern Palaearctic)........... Tenthredo temula var. irkutensis Jakowlew, 1888
