Barcinus horridus Stål 1873

( Figs. 1–3, 9–13; photos 1, 2; map 1)

Barcinus horridus Stål 1873: 142 (orig. descr.)

Barcinus horridus Usinger & Matsuda 1959: 276 (keyed)

Barcinus horridus Bloete 1965: 21 (rec. Sumatra, Java)

Barcinus horridus Kormilev & Froeschner 1987: 112 (cat.)

Material examined: 1♂ pinned with labels: “ Malacca ”/“ Coll. Signoret ”//“ horrida / det. Signoret ”//“ horrida / det. Stål ”. This specimen from Signorets collection in the NHMW was not designated as type specimen but corresponds to Stål’s description based on a single male and is therefore undoubtedly the holotype by monotypy, and herewith is designated and labelled accordingly: “ Holotype ♂ / Barcinus horridus / Stål 1873 / labelled by E.Heiss 2010”. The mentioned labels attached to this type specimen are not original and were later added by the former curator of Hemiptera Anton Handlirsch (1865–1935) .

1♂ card mounted:” Malaysia Perak / Banjaran Titiwangsa / Mts., Mt Sepat 1800m / 15–19 IV 00 Cechovsky” ( CEHI) ; 1♀ pinned: “Malak.”/“ Mus. Paris”/” coll. O.Fallou 259-95”//“ Barcinus / horridus Stål / coll. Falou ”/” Barcinus / horridus / ( Walker ) / Det.N.Kormilev 1973”. ( CEHI ex.coll. Kormilev) ; 1♀ card mounted: “W Malaysia, Pahang, Benon / Mts.: 3°53 N, 102°01 E, 15km / east Kampong Dong 300–1000m / 24 III–15 IV 1998, Pacholatko”. ( CEHI) GoogleMaps .

Barcinus horridus seems to be rare and in addition to the few abovementioned specimens only 2 records from Sumatra and Java ( Blöte 1965) are reported to date in the literature. These specimens, both females, from Fort de Kock (Bukittinggi) and Preanger (W-Java) deposited at the RMNH were kindly examined on my request by P. van Doesburg, who confirmed their identity with B.horridus .

The general colouration is brown, ochraceous are the posterior half of deltg VI, tergite VII, anterior half of paratergites VIII, the venter except the lateral border of sternites II–IV and the entire sternite VIII in female and the pygophore in male, a larger median and a smaller subapical ring on tibiae, and a fading subapical ring on femora; further, the midlateral apodemal impressions (glabrous spots), which are delimited by the lateral carina of the tergal plate, and the suture to deltg’s.

PHOTOS 1–6. 1— Barcinus horridus ♂ ( Malaysia, Perak) ; 2— B. horridus ♀ ( Malaysia, Pahang) ; 3— Heterobarcinus bhoutanensis ♀ ( India west Bengal) ; 4— Heterobarcinus kormilevi , paratype ♂ ( Hainan ) ; 5— Heterobarcinus schaeferi n. sp., holotype ♀ ( China, Fujian) ; 6— Heterobarcinus minor n. sp., holotype ♂ ( China, Yunnan) .

Although deltg II–V bear bifurcate lateral expansions, they are triangular and acute on deltg VI and VII. The tergites VIII are spine-like directed posteriorly in female, and tergite IX with finger-like projections. The pygophore of the male is conical posteriorly, its upper half only slightly produced over the lower portion in lateral view (fig. 3); the paramerees are as figs. 9–13. The spiracles III–VI are ventral and far from the lateral margin, VII sublateral on the inner margin of the triangular projection but not visible from above, VIII lateral and visible from above.

Measurements: Holotype ♂: length 11.0 mm; length / width of head 20/14; w/l of pronotum 41/17; scutellum w/l 21/15; length of antennal segment I/II/III/IV = 15/8/14/7, ratio length of antennae / width of head 3.14; width of abdomen across tergite IV 58.5, VI 50, VII 29.5; second ♂: length 11.3mm; head l/w 18/ 13.5; pronotum w/l 40/17.5; scutellum w/l 21/14; length antennae I/II/III/IV = 13.5/8.5/14/4.5; ratio l antennae / w head 3,0 (40.5/13.5); w abdomen across tergite IV 58, VI 47.5 VII 28.

Females, 2 specimens: length 11.8–12.2mm; l/w head 20/14–22/15; w/l pronotum 48/20–47/20; w/l scutellum 23/17–23/16; length antennae I/II/III/IV = 15/9/16/7–15.5/9.5/16/7.5; ratio l antennae / w head 3.35–3.23; w abdomen across tergite IV 61–65, VI 57–56, VII 34–33.
