Botrodus championi Slipinski

( Figs 21–27 View FIGURES 21–27 )

Murmidius estriatus Champion, 1913: 83 . Preoccupied, not Casey, 1890.

Botrodus championi Slipinski, 1990: 87 . New name for Murmidius estriatus Champion, 1913 .

Type material examined. Lectotype ( Mexico) [here designated by A. Ślipiński], sex unknown, “Tampico, Mex., 26.12 / E.A. Schwarz collector”, “cotype “, “ Murmidius estriatus Champ. ”, “ U.S.Nat.Mus. 1913-253 det Champion”, “not Murmidius, Mychocerus ? van Emden det. 1937” ( USNM).

Additional material examined. Mexico, 1 ♀, “ Hwy. 24, 9 mi. S.E. Teopisca, Chis, 14. V .1969, D.E. Bright ( CNC) ; 1 ♂, “ MEX. GRO. / Coyucade Benetiz / 23-VII-1984 / Gilett + Miranda”, “on Mimosa pigra” ( USNM) .

Diagnosis. Body moderately dark brown; elytra in lateral view evenly rounded; clypeus evenly, weakly convex; lateral elytral margin visible in dorsal view near humerus; mesoventrite with lateral longitudinal carinae along mesal margins of mesocoxae; mesoventral plate with anterior margin evenly rounded; each paramere ~3.75 times as long as broad at base, in distal half with 5–7 long setae, with ventral row of 4 short setae, and with one sub-basal ventral seta.

Description. BL 1.30–1.58 mm; BL/EW 1.73–1.80. Body elongate ( Figs 21–22 View FIGURES 21–27 ) and in lateral view evenly, moderately convex ( Fig. 24 View FIGURES 21–27 ); pigmentation moderately dark brown, legs yellowish brown; dorsum covered with moderately sparse, extremely short yellowish setae barely visible under magnification 40 ×; cuticle glossy with very fine and superficial microreticulation, distinct on head and pronotum which are slightly less glossy then elytra, on which microreticulation is poorly discernible.

Head 0.33–0.38 mm wide; frons and clypeus weakly, evenly convex, covered with dense and sharply marked but shallow and fine punctures separated by spaces subequal to their diameters; eyes large, strongly convex, coarsely faceted.

Pronotum ( Figs 21–22 View FIGURES 21–27 ) strongly transverse, widest at base; PL 0.30–0.35 mm, PW 0.60–0.69 mm, PL/PW 0.50–0.51; lateral margins distinctly rounded in anterior third, posteriorly nearly straight, weakly convergent anterad, with narrow lateral carinae; disc along lateral carinae not flattened. Punctures on disc fine but distinct, sharply marked, similar to those on frons, punctures on median region separated by spaces subequal to their diameters, gradually reducing in diameter and depth towards sides of pronotum.

Prosternum ( Fig. 23 View FIGURES 21–27 ) smooth, not microreticulate and with very fine, sparse punctures; notosternal carinae strongly curved outwards.

Elytra ( Figs 21–22, 24 View FIGURES 21–27 ) together oval, weakly rounded at sides, EL 0.95–1.18 mm, EW 0.75–0.88 mm, EL/EW 1.27–1.34. Lateral elytral margin visible in dorsal view near humerus, and very weakly so, in posterior third; elytral base anteriorly convex; humerus with distinct, bulging callus; disc covered with punctures slightly larger and distinctly sparser than those on pronotum.

Hind wings fully developed.

Mesoventral plate ( Fig. 25 View FIGURES 21–27 ) with lateral longitudinal carinae and complete submarginal carina, anterior margin of plate evenly rounded.

Metaventrite ( Fig. 25 View FIGURES 21–27 ) extremely finely and uniformly punctate; discrimen externally indiscernible.

Aedeagus ( Figs 26–27 View FIGURES 21–27 ) 0.40 mm long, with parameres in lateral view weakly curved ventrad, each ~3.75 times as long as broad at base, in distal half with 5–7 long setae, with ventral row of 4 short setae, and with one sub-basal ventral seta; penis inconspicuous, slender, nearly tubular and in distal half indistinctly curved.

Distribution. Neotropical ( Mexico).
