Botrodus estriatus Casey

( Figs 14–20 View FIGURES 14–20 )

Botrodus estriatus Casey, 1890: 320 .

Type material examined. Holotype ( USA): sex unknown, “ Columbus 10.7. Texas ”, “ Type ”, “ Ty 48836”, “ Botrodus estriatus ” ( USNM).

Additional material examined. Jamaica, 1 ♂ and 1 ex. of unknown sex, Trelawny, Duncans , 13.vii.1966, Howden & Becker leg. ( ANIC) .

Diagnosis. Body light reddish brown; elytra in lateral view evenly rounded; clypeus evenly, weakly convex; lateral elytral margin not visible in dorsal view; mesoventrite lacking lateral longitudinal carinae along mesal margins of mesocoxae; mesoventral plate with anterior margin evenly rounded; each paramere ~4.5 times as long as broad at base, with only apical setae.

Description. BL 1.15–1.28 mm; BL/EW 1.77–1.89. Body elongate ( Figs 35, 37 View FIGURES 35–41 ) and in lateral view evenly, moderately convex ( Fig. 37 View FIGURES 35–41 ); pigmentation light brown with reddish hue, legs distinctly lighter brown; dorsum covered with moderately sparse, extremely short yellowish setae barely visible under magnification 40 ×; cuticle glossy with traces of superficial, indistinct microreticulation.

Head 0.28–0.30 mm wide; frons and clypeus weakly, evenly convex, covered with dense and sharply marked but shallow punctures separated by spaces subequal to their diameters; eyes large, strongly convex, coarsely faceted.

Pronotum ( Figs 14–15 View FIGURES 14–20 ) strongly transverse, widest at base; PL 0.28 mm, PW 0.53–0.58 mm, PL/PW 0.48–0.52; lateral margins rounded only near anterior corners, posteriorly straight, weakly convergent anterad, with narrow lateral carinae; disc along lateral carinae not flattened. Punctures on disc fine but distinct, sharply marked, those on median region separated by spaces subequal to their diameters, gradually reducing in diameter and depth towards sides of pronotum.

Prosternum ( Fig. 16 View FIGURES 14–20 ) smooth, not microreticulate and lacking punctures; notosternal carinae strongly curved outwards.

Elytra ( Figs 14–15, 17 View FIGURES 14–20 ) together oval, nearly parallel-sided, EL 0.83–0.95 mm, EW 0.65–0.68 mm, EL/EW 1.27–1.41. Lateral elytral margin not visible in dorsal view; elytral base anteriorly convex; humerus with distinct, bulging callus; disc covered with punctures similar to those on pronotum but slightly sparser, surface of elytra slightly glossier than that of pronotum.

Hind wings fully developed.

Mesoventral plate ( Fig. 18 View FIGURES 14–20 ) lacking lateral longitudinal carinae, with complete submarginal carina, anterior margin of plate evenly rounded.

Metaventrite ( Fig. 18 View FIGURES 14–20 ) virtually impunctate in median region and with sparse, fine punctures on sides, discrimen externally not discernible.

Aedeagus ( Figs 19–20 View FIGURES 14–20 ) 0.38 mm long, with parameres in lateral view strongly curved ventrad, each ~4.5 × as long as broad at base, with 4 long apical setae; penis inconspicuous, slender, nearly tubular and in distal half straight.

Distribution. Nearctic ( USA) and Caribbean ( Jamaica).
