Etymology

The species is dedicated to Albert G. Orr (masculine singular genitive noun).

Male (holotype)

Head − Anterior ⅔ of labium dark brown, posterior third yellow-brown. Rear of head of normal shape. Labrum and clypeus shining metallic black. Genae and mandibles dull yellow with the latter black in the upper anterior corner; remainder of head including antennae dull black ( Fig. 13 View Figures 7 – 14 ).

Thorax − Sides of prothorax and middle lobe of pronotum covered with dark blue pruinosity. Anterior and posterior lobe of pronotum black. Posterior lobe of pronotum broad, largely flat but with the outer border raised, lateral corners rounded. Pattern of thorax largely obscured by blue pruinosity ( Fig. 21 View Figures 19 – 22 ).

Legs − Coxae and trochanters dull orange-yellow. Femora brown, extensively black near knees and with black keel; tibiae and tarsi brown. Spines dark brown; femora with respectively 9, 9, 11–2 spines laterally; tibiae of fore legs with 10 smaller and 4 larger spines laterally; tibiae of mid and hind legs with 10 and 12 spines respectively laterally.

Wings − Venation black. Base hyaline but with a yellow tinge from discoidal cell onwards and a faint smoky outer border. Fw and Hw with 2 Ax; Fw with 35 Px and Hw with 30–33 Px. Ac in Fw level with Ax1. Brace vein absent. Pterostigma dark brown. Up to three rows of cells between anal vein and border of Fw and up to five in Hw. Fields between Ir2 and R3, between R3 and IR3, and between IR3 and R4 at distal end containing 3 or more rows of cells.

Abdomen − Pattern as in Figure 21 View Figures 19 – 22 ; dark elements dark brown to black, pale elements yellow-brown. Anterior half of S1 blue with pruinosity, posterior half dark brown, S2 with dorsum black and sides pale yellow-brown, S3–7 dorsally largely dark, ventral and lower lateral area pale brown, anteriorly on each segment the pale brown reaches to the dorsum forming a dorsally broken ring covering approximately a fifth to a tenth of the segment. S9– 10 black, the latter strongly depressed in the middle, hind border of S10 without modifications. Appendages as shown in Figs 43–45 View Figures 40 – 45 ; dark brown with base of lower appendages yellow. Lower appendages long, about half the length of the upper appendages, directed upwards and ending near the flange halfway the upper appendages. Genital ligula as in Figures 32–33 View Figures 28 – 33 , ligula with shallow and apically broad cleft. Lateral lobes of ligula large with rounded tip but not constricted in the middle.

Measurements [mm] − Total length 47, abdomen 38, Fw 35; Hw 35; Fw pterostigma 1.9 (costal length), 2.6 (longest length); Hw pterostigma 2.0 (costal length), 2.8 (longest length).

Variability

This species shows, like C. cinctus , small regional variability in the shape of the inferior appendages. This variability was deemed too small to warrant any taxonomical status. The amount of black on head thorax and legs shows not only variability due to age but shows also regional variability with specimens of northern populations having a less extensive black pattern. This variability is gradual and does not allow the recognition of subspecies. Head − In specimens of the northern population the pale markings are more extensive running up along the eyes and to the sockets of the antennae and covering the outer corners of the postclypeus ( Fig. 14 View Figures 7 – 14 ). In specimens from the South the pattern on the head is as in the holotype ( Fig. 13 View Figures 7 – 14 ). Thorax − In specimens of southern populations the front on the thorax is almost completely black ( Fig. 21 View Figures 19 – 22 ), whereas in specimens of northern populations a large yellow-brown stripe is present on both sides of it ( Fig. 22 View Figures 19 – 22 ). Legs − Specimens of southern populations have legs like the holotype: femora brown with extensive black near knees and black keel; tibiae and tarsi brown. In specimens of the northern populations the black on the legs is slightly less extensive but they have two broad but faint black rings on the femur.

Wings − Fw and Hw with 2 Ax; Fw with 30–35 Px and Hw with 25–33 Px. Measurements [mm] − Total length 46–51, abdomen 37–41, Fw 33–37, Hw 33–37.

Female

Head − Pattern as in male.

Thorax − Pattern on prothorax, synthorax and legs as in male. Fw and Hw with 2 Ax; Fw with 27–30 Px and Hw with 25–27 Px. Pt cream white with a slight yellow tinge, outer border in older specimens mottled greyish-black.

Abdomen − Stockier and shorter than in male. Pattern largely as in male; dark parts are dark brown to black, pale parts are yellow-brown. S10 dorsally black but laterally largely pale brown, cerci and valvifer brown, shaped as in C. cinctus .

Measurements [mm] − Total length 39–41, abdomen 30–32, Fw 31–32; Hw 30–32.

Differential diagnosis

Males are distinguished from other species of Celebargiolestes by the combination of the following characters: (i) labrum black; (ii) postclypeus and frons largely black; (iii) ligula with a shallow apical cleft; (iv) lower appendages long, about halve the length of the upper appendages and, when seen from lateral, with the tip reaching the level of the upper appendages.
