Crioprosopus saundersii White, 1853:79 View in CoL (Type locality: Mexico); Monné & Hovore, 2006:140 (cat.)

Crioprosopus saundersi Gemminger & Harold, 1872:2967 View in CoL (cat.); Bates, 1880:74 (dist.); Aurivillius, 1912:458 (cat.); Distribution. Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua.

Note. According to the description by White (1853), this species has the following characteristics: The head is black, with the front and between the antennae furrowed longitudinally. Frons behind the labrum is also furrowed transversely. The notch of the eyes is hollowed out and covered with grey hairs. The first five joints of the antennae are black, and the six following are somewhat ferruginous. The joints are slightly ciliated on the outside, and with several short hairs at the end. The thorax is very smooth, polished, black, and each side has a large orange spot, which does not reach the fore margin, extending somewhat over the back, and reaching the hind margin where it is sinuate. The fore margin of the thorax is ciliate. The sides of the thorax are protuberant and with a few scattered hairs. The scutellum is sharp, and pointed at the apex. The elytra are black, surface slightly wrinkled, with a broadish transverse pale yellow band, just behind the base, which is slightly interrupted at the suture where it is contracted both in front and behind. Behind the middle of each elytron there is a large pale yellow spot, which does not touch the margin and is considerably separated from the suture, and is cut off obliquely behind. Each elytron has three longitudinal costae, and the surface is slightly punctured. The punctures are more apparent on the yellow spots. The tip of each elytron is obliquely truncate and margined with short brown hairs. The metathorax is more or less thickly covered with grey silky hairs, and the sides of the abdomen beneath are grey silky pubescence with longer scattered hairs on the underside of each segment. The legs are black, and the last joint of the tarsi is ferruginous. The tips of tibiae on the inside are with many short ferruginous hairs. Length: 16 lines (33.9 mm). Habitat: Mexico (W.W. Saunders, Esq.).

The specimen described above appears to be a female, based on the characteristics of the pronotum. The description of the undersurface appears to resemble Crioprosopus View in CoL in the way that the pubescence is distributed. Currently, a specimen of Crioprosopus saundersii View in CoL has not been examined; however, this species is very likely to be conspecific to C. servillei Audinet-Serville View in CoL where the dark maculations on the elytral and pronotal disc are more extensive.
