ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1863: 18.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Sancta Fe de Bogotá [Santa Fe de Bogotá ( Colombia)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀, syntype (dirty, covered with mold) ( MZUN: Box Coll. entomol. extra-europea, Tachinidei - Gen. Dejeania a Belvosia ): Cryptopalpus histrix Rnd., S. Fe. Bog. / M. Zool. N° 11333.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Cryptopalpus nigriventris ( Macquart, 1844) ( Guimarães 1971: 61, Nihei 2016: 919).

REMARKS: Rondani (1863: 18) described Cryptopalpus histrix from just the female sex, without specifying either the number or the length of the specimens, from material received from P.J.M. Macquart. Costa (1866: 32) listed a single MZUN specimen (sub “ C. hystrix ”) numbered “665”. We also found one syntype in this study. Guimarães (1971: 61) and O’Hara et al. (2011: 210) listed Cryptopalpus histrix and Cryptopalpus hystrix as two different species described in 1863. Nihei (2016: 919) considered “ histrix ” as a misspelling and “ hystrix ” as the correct name. This latter nominal species has never been described. We consider “ histrix ” as the correct spelling of the name and “ hystrix ” as an incorrect subsequent spelling.
