Cyrtocapsus grenadensis Carvalho View in CoL

( Figs. 29, 30 View FIGURES 29–39 , 75, 76 View Figures 71– 84 )

Cyrtocapsus grenadensis Carvalho 1954: 16 View in CoL (original description; Dominica); Henry & Carvalho 1987: 292 (key); Schuh 1995: 542 (catalog), 2002–2013 (online catalog).

Diagnosis. This species ( Figs. 29, 30 View FIGURES 29–39 ) is recognized by the black dorsum, with the embolium yellowish brown basally, the uniformly pale whitish antenna, and the dark brown coxae, with only the apical third of the front coxa pale.

Cyrtocapsus grenadensis is most similar to C. caligineus ( Figs. 13, 14 View FIGURES 8–17 ) and C. pallipes ( Figs. 44, 45 View FIGURES 40–48 ) in the overall dark color, the pale yellowish-white antenna, and dark brown middle and hind coxae. Cyrtocapsus caligineus differs by the larger size (3.82–4.12 mm vs. 3.14–3.46 mm), longer antennal segment II (0.66–0.72 mm vs 0.56– 0.59 mm), in having the apical half of the corium and the entire embolium uniformly yellowish brown to brownish orange (versus corium uniformly dark and embolium pale at base only), and C. pallipes differs in larger average size (3.36–3.68 mm) and uniformly pale or white front coxa.

Description. Male ( Fig. 29 View FIGURES 29–39 ) (n = 5, plus holotype measurements in parentheses): Length to apex of membrane 3.14–3.23 mm (3.23 mm), length to base of cuneus 2.02–2.18 mm (2.02 mm), widest width across hemelytra 1.30– 1.34 mm (1.34 mm). Head: Width 0.80–0.83 mm (0.82 mm), interocular width 0.42–0.43 mm (0.42 mm). Labium: Length 0.83–0.85 mm (0.80 mm, bent). Antenna: Segment I length 0.46–0.48 mm (0.46 mm); II, 0.56–0.59 mm (0.58 mm); III (n = 2), 0.40–0.42 mm (0.42 mm); IV (n = 2), 0.54–0.59 mm (0.51 mm). Pronotum: Median length 0.74–0.75 mm (0.70 mm), basal width 1.14–1.17 mm (1.14 mm).

Coloration: Head with vertex and frons black, clypeus and inner margin bordering eyes brown, sides and ventral yellowish white; eyes reddish brown. Labium pale yellowish white, apex of segment IV brown. Antenna uniformly pale yellowish white, segment IV pale brown. Pronotum and scutellum uniformly black. Hemelytron black, with embolium entirely, or at least on basal half, yellowish brown. Ventral surface fuscous to black. Coxae dark brown, apical third of front coxa pale white; remainder of legs pale yellowish white.

Texture and vestiture: Head shiny, rugose, with a few fine punctures; with dense silvery, sericeous setae, especially medially and along inner margins of eyes. Pronotum shiny, coarsely punctate on disc, more finely punctate on collar and calli; with dense silvery, sericeous setae. Scutellum finely punctate, with dense silvery, sericeous setae. Hemelytron dull, impunctate, with dense silvery, sericeous setae, middle of clavus and corium with small glabrous patches.

Male genitalia: Left paramere ( Fig. 75 View Figures 71– 84 ) stoutly C-shaped. Right paramere ( Fig. 76 View Figures 71– 84 ) elongate oval, tapering to a small point apically.

Female ( Fig. 30 View FIGURES 29–39 ) (n = 5): Length to apex of membrane 3.20–3.46 mm, length to base of cuneus 2.08–2.24 mm, widest width across hemelytra 1.31–1.42 mm. Head: Width 0.82–0.85 mm, interocular width 0.40–0.43 mm. Labium: Length 0.80–0.83 mm. Antenna: Segment I length 0.45–0.48 mm; II, 0.54–0.59 mm; III, 0.37–0.43 mm; IV (n = 4), 0.50–0.64 mm. Pronotum: Median length 0.69–0.77 mm, basal width 1.18–1.25 mm.

Host. Large series of this species were taken on Dominica causing yellow stippling to Ipomoea sp. [ Convolvulaceae ] leaves. A. G. Wheeler (pers. comm.) noted that adults and nymphs of C. grenadensis were present on Ipomoea tiliacea (Willd.) Choisy and Thunbergia grandiflora (Roxb. Ex Rottl.) Roxb. [ Acanthaceae ] at a Springfield Plantation, St. Paul Parish site, on 16 May 2005, with nymphs more numerous and foliar chlorosis present.

Distribution. Previously known only from Dominica and Grenada ( Carvalho 1954). Guatemala, Mexico, and Venezuela are new country records.
