scientific name

Emersoniella coniceps ( Piaget, 1880 )
status

comb. nov.

Emersoniella coniceps ( Piaget, 1880) , new combination

Nirmus coniceps Piaget, 1880: 136 .

Brueelia coniceps ( Piaget), 1880 ; Hopkins & Clay 1952: 54.

Type host. Aceros cassidix (Temminck, 1823) —knobbed hornbill.

Remarks. We studied the single female (the holotype) in the Piaget collection at NHML, and conclude that it belongs to Emersoniella . Using the key in Gustafsson & Bush (2014), it can be identified as either E. crassicarina Gustafsson & Bush, 2014 or E. regis Emerson & Price, 1978 . However, that single female cannot be reliably placed in either species, because Emersoniella is a poorly known genus with many more species likely to be discovered. Therefore, we make no attempt to place this name in synonymy wuth any better known spcis. Since no Emersoniella lice are known from other members of the Bucerotidae , this female holotype is likely a straggler, a contaminant, or its host has been misidentified.
