Notiobia nitidipennis (LeConte)

Eurytrichus nitidipennis LeConte, 1848: 388 . Type material: Holotype male, labelled: orange disc, without lettering, ‘‘504’’, ‘‘TYPE 5963’’, ‘‘ E. nitidipennis LeC.’’ (MCZ). Type area : Georgia, as originally cited.

Anisotarsus delicatus Casey, 1914: 214 . Type locality: Asheville, North Carolina. Type not studied.

Harpalus conspectus Casey, 1924: 104 . Type locality: Mt. Royal , Quebec, Canada, as originally cited. Type not studied.

Harpalus agitabilis Casey, 1924: 104 . Type locality: District of Columbia, as originally cited. Type not studied.

Notes About Type Material. The holotype of Eurytrichus nitidipennis LeConte was studied to confirm its identity. The other types were not studied, as they are from areas other than Florida, and I accept their nomenclatural status as junior synonyms, as recorded by Noonan (1973:305) .

Comparison. Specimens of this species are separated from those of N. cephalus by a combination of three character states (supported by ratios) and locality: head narrower (Hw/Pw = 0.662 –0.710; Hw/SBL = 0.236 –0.252); gena narrower (Gw/Sw = 0.545 –0.818); pronotum narrower (Pl/Pw = 0.676 – 0.719) and from a locality other than Florida. Additionally, males have only 1 pair of setae on sternum VII.

See Table 1 for data about variation in selected values of body proportions for this species (non­Floridian sample). All mensural values for the holotype of N. nitidipennis fall within the ranges expressed in Table 1 for the series of N. nitidipennis from Pennsylvania. Also, N. nitidipennis did not show any clinal variation from north to south.

Geographical Distribution. This species ranges from southern Ontario and Quebec in Canada through the eastern third of United States, and west to Arkansas and Texas , but has not been recorded from Florida.
