Graminofolium Nickle, 2007 View in CoL

Machaira Piza, 1958 , primary homonym of Machaira Brauer & Bergenstamm, 1890

Amazonicesa Koçak & Kemal 2010 View in CoL syn. nov., unnecessary replacement name

Graminofolium amazonensis (Piza, 1958) View in CoL comb. nov.

Machaira amazonensis Piza, 1958 shares various characters with two Peruvian species for which Nickle (2007) erected the genus Graminofolium View in CoL , and most probably belongs to the same genus. We arrived at this conclusion after comparing Nickle’s diagnosis of Graminofolium View in CoL with the description and the specimens of Piza. However, the older name Machaira (the Greek word for a large bladed weapon, obviously for the conspicuous ovipositor which exceeds the body in length) is a junior homonym of a genus name in Diptera, as lepidopterists at the Centre for Entomological Studies Ankara (CESA) recently discovered during their ongoing work of systematically searching for homonyms among insect names. Since the junior synonym Graminofolium View in CoL is available as substitute name, the name Amazonicesa View in CoL is unnecessary (and it is slightly inappropriate to name katydids from the Brazilian Amazon after an entirely unrelated Turkish institution). While Machaira was described as belonging to the tribe Agraeciini View in CoL , this placement is uncertain, since it also shows characters of Copiphorini View in CoL . Nickle did not resolve the tribal relationship but mentioned the need of further studies.
