Asaphes aereus (Melsheimer) : LeConte 1853: 450; Candèze 1863: 215; Horn 1880: 73 (as synonym of H. decoloratus ).

Diagnosis. Hemicrepidius hemipodus can be distinguished from all congeners by the following combination of features: An ear-like posterior end of the hypomeron so pronotal hind angle not visible in ventral view, and the curved prosternal process. Males can further be distinguished by having most punctures on the pronotal disc separated by one diameter or less, while both sexes can be distinguished by having lateral pronotal punctures subumbilicate and separated by <0.5× puncture diameter.

Hemicrepidius hemipodus could be confused with H. decoloratus and H. indistinctus . Key characters to separate H. hemipodus and H. decoloratus are provided in the diagnosis for H. decoloratus above. With H. indistinctus , only female H. hemipodus would likely be confused. They can be separated by female H. hemipodus having much closer and subumbilicate punctures on the lateral side of the pronotum, the punctures on the head being very dense and close, and in most by the slight metallic reflection on the elytra.

Redescription. Length 10.0–16.0 mm, width 2.0–4.0 mm; color uniformly brown to black or with elytra brown to dark brown and paler than dark brown to black pronotum, legs and antennae variable, yellow-brown to dark brown, antennae in most darker than legs, sometimes edges of pronotum, edges of elytra, and edges of abdominal ventrites paler; integument shining, some with slight metallic reflection. Setae moderately long, dense on pronotum in most, shorter on elytra and ventral surfaces, depressed, yellow or gray. Head: Punctures subumbilicate, nearly contiguous; frons weakly concave anteromedially when viewed dorsally; frontal carina broadly rounded when viewed from the front, often interrupted medially by punctation, frontoclypeal region complete and narrow medially, weakly projecting in lateral view; eyes moderate, rounded, somewhat bulging, ocular index 65–74 (n = 5); antenna weakly serrate, antennomere 2 subcylindrical, antennomere 3 subcylindrical, 1.5–2× length of 2 and with similar punctation to 2, antennomere 3 subequal in length to 4, antennomeres 4–11 about 3× longer than wide, becoming longer and narrower apically, antennomere 11 oval, sometimes with tip subtly constricted, antenna extending beyond pronotal posterior edge by 1.5–2.5 antennomeres. Prothorax: Pronotum as wide as long to 1.2× wider than long, widest at hind angles (most males) or at midlength (females); sides weakly to broadly arcuate, gradually narrowing anteriorly; hind angles divergent or weakly divergent, lateral edge sinuate anterior of hind angle, dorsal carina variable, absent (some males) to present, if present, thin or just slightly narrower than lateral carina (most females), parallel to lateral carina; punctures appearing simple, nearly touching to separated by one to two puncture diameters on disc, many females less punctate than males, punctures larger, shallower, and closer laterally, nearly contiguous, subumbilicate; posterior edge with sublateral notches. Hypomeron with punctures similar in size to lateral pronotal punctures, subumbilicate, nearly contiguous anteriorly and further apart posteriorly, small impunctate area present on posterior one-fifth at most; posterior margin ear-like ( Fig. 19c View Fig ) such that hind angle not visible in ventral view. Prosternum with punctation smaller than punctation on hypomeron, appearing simple, punctures nearly contiguous laterally, further apart medially, separated by two puncture diameters or more; anterior lobe slightly deflexed, slightly truncate anteriorly and partially covering ventral mouthparts; prosternal process slightly curved dorsad between procoxae in lateral view, narrow and straight past procoxae. Pterothorax: Mesoventral cavity with lateral edges sinuate, not visible anteriad mesocoxae in lateral view; posterior edge of cavity truncate. Metaventrite with punctures smaller than punctures on hypomeron, simple, dense laterally, nearly touching, becoming less dense medially. Scutellar shield elongate, about twice as long as wide, broadly rounded posteriorly, sides weakly sinuate, dorsal surface weakly convex, anterior margin nearly straight, setae radiating from midline, longer than setae on elytra. Elytral striae weakly impressed basally; interstriae flat to slightly convex, punctures moderate in size, scattered, giving wrinkled appearance; basal carina simple. Legs with lobes on tarsomeres 2 and 3 moderately wide, visible dorsally, lobe on 3 just slightly larger than lobe on tarsomere 2, lobe on tarsomere 1 small, lobe on tarsomere 4 smallest, both lobes on tarsomeres 1 and 4 visible in lateral view. Abdominal ventrites: Punctures simple, slightly smaller than punctures on metaventrite, nearly contiguous, less dense medially; fifth ventrite narrowly rounded; sides of ventrites 1 to 4 with microserrations partially obliterated in most, limited to anterior half of each ventrite with posterior half a series of shallow pits, or only noticeable at highest magnification (56× here), microserrations on ventrite 5 appearing absent. Male genitalia ( Figs. 19d, e View Fig ): Parameres broadly sinuate laterally and medially, pre-apical expansion acutely pointed laterally, apex of paramere broadly rounded, membranous, setose ventral patch near pre-apical expansion and 4–5 dorsal apical setae. Median lobe moderately thick, slightly sinuate laterally, basal struts broadly curved laterobasally. Basal piece with membranous area broadly curved medially in ventral view.

Distribution. Specimens were examined from the following states: UNITED STATES: AR, AZ, CT, DC, FL, IA, IL, IN, KS, LA, MA, MD, MI, MO, MS, NJ, NM, NY, OH, PA, SC, TN, VA, WV, WI ( Fig. 20b View Fig ). Canadian records for this species (e. g., Bousquet et al. 2013) likely refer to H. decoloratus and the status of this species in Canada needs confirmation.

Notes. This species has been historically confused with H. decoloratus . Areas of confusion with that species are discussed under notes for H. decoloratus above.

Athous aeneolus and A. aereus have been synonymized with H. hemipodus . These names have long been associated with the hemipodus-decoloratus complex, and are best placed here. It appears that Elater hemipodus was described from a female specimen, and females are generally more convex and less punctate on the disc than males (compare Figs. 19a and 19b View Fig ). Males match the type of A. aereus in the Melsheimer collection in the MCZC. The amount of sexual dimorphism observed in this species is common within Hemicrepidius .

The one remaining troubling name is A. aeneolus . LeConte (1853) stated that A. aereus is the female form and A. aeneolus is the male form of the same species. However, the specimen labeled A. aereus in the LeConte collection is actually a male, not a female. Melsheimer (1846), however, mentioned both sexes in his description of A. aereus , suggesting this species was described from more than one specimen and both sexes. Adding to this issue is that all six specimens in the Melsheimer collection under the name A. aereus are males, likely due to label removal or transfers over time. This means the original types of these two names are likely mixed within this series of six specimens. The type of A. aeneolus is considered lost, as it is impossible to determine which ones were examined by Melsheimer at the time of description.

As with most Say names, the type of E. hemipodus is either lost or a specimen identified by Say with his identification label, and a potential neotype, is located in a collection somewhere in Europe ( Prena 2018). The original description of this species closely matches two specimens labeled with the species name in the LeConte collection in the MCZC. Since the designation of a neotype of H. decoloratus here should eliminate confusion between these two species, I have not done so here until material in European collections can be examined thoroughly.

A series of three specimens labeled Diacanthus corporosus are located in the Museum für Naturkunde, Berlin, Germany (B. Jaeger, in litt.). One of the three has a lectotype label from M. C. Lane (unpublished, here desiginated) and is a typical female of this species .
