Hypothenemus sparsus and previously recognized synonyms have been reported from southeastern Texas and adjacent Tamaulipas in northeastern Mexico. I have examined large numbers of specimens from the broader region as well as all types. I conclude that only a single species is present. Wood (1982: 896) also suggested this synonymy. Specimens previously referred to H. sparsus by Wood have narrower interstrial scales that most specimens assigned to H. pubescens , but this should not cause problems in identification.
