Lysilinga occipitalis (Adams) View in CoL

( Figs. 367, 377, 387, 397, 407, 417, 427, 437, 445, 449)

occipitalis Adams (1904:443 View in CoL orig. desc.), Cole (1923a: 35 male key) ( Psilocephala View in CoL ); Irwin and Lyneborg (1981a:232 comb. change) ( Lysilinga View in CoL ). Type locality United States, Arizona, Bill Williams Fork. Holotype in SEMC.

subrufa Cole (1923a: 37 View in CoL fem. key, 68 orig. desc.) ( Psilocephala View in CoL ); Irwin and Lyneborg (1981a:232 comb. change) ( Lysilinga View in CoL ). Type locality Superstition Mount, Highley, Arizona. Holotype female in United States Biological Survey (USNM). New Synonym.

The holotype female of Psilocephala subrufa Cole View in CoL was determined to be conspecific with Lysilinga occipitalis View in CoL based on the dark yellow occipital, postocular, thoracic, and coxal macrosetae and the large, dark brown area dorsolaterally on the frons.

Diagnosis

Lysilinga occipitalis is taxonomically associated with L. aurantiaca in lacking setae on the katepisternum and in having the abdomen yellowish orange or at least tergites 2–4 orange. Lysilinga occipitalis differs from L. aurantiaca in having the occipital, postocular, thoracic, and coxal macrosetae yellowish brown and the female frons with a large dark brown area dorsolaterally.

Redescription of male

Habitats and phenology

Adults of Lysilinga occipitalis have been handnetted on Sapindus sp. and an orchidaceous legume tree, as well as collected at ultraviolet and argon light traps. Specimens have been collected from 4 April to 18 August.
