Map 8. Figure 21 View FIGURE 21. a – e (f–j).

Type locality. Costa Rica, Limón, Verágua Research Station, 09°55.520'N 83°11.439'W. Holotype male INBio.

Male. Head: Brown. Face lateral ¼ pale, with only a few black pile ventral to antennal insertion. Lunule with small pale area above antennal insertions but leaving a wide dark vitta connecting the central macula to the frontal triangle color. Frontal triangle with pair of median oval spots of silvery-white pollen laterally, pollen absent dorsally around lunule. Vertical triangle with 1 median row of pile; ocellar triangle ~1.5 times its length from posterior eye margin. Eye contiguity as long as vertical triangle length. Eye with posterior indentation at level of antennal insertion. Antennal insertions confluent, ventral margin with short dorsal extension. Dorsal ¼ of occiput with a row of simple black pile and an anterior row of very short simple black pile on dorsal ½ of this region; middle ½ with 3 rows of scale-like white pile, posterior row longer, anterior rows sometimes with a few simple black pile dorsally; ventral ¼ with 2–3 irregular rows of scale-like white pile.

Thorax: Scutum brown, mainly brown dull pollinose, except with white pollen on anterior pair of short vittate maculae; scutum black pilose, except pile white and slightly longer on notopleuron and anterior to scutellum; scutum anterior row of scale-like white pile interrupted in the middle. Scutellum brown, black pilose but white pilose basally, subscutellar fringe pile normal and white. Pleuron white pilose and brown except pale on posterior ½ of posterior anepisternum and dorso-posterior of katepisternum. Plumula yellow. Calypter white, fringe light brown. Halter white.

Wing: Entirely dark brown, slightly lighter on posterior margin, entirely microtrichose; alula basally 1.5 times to apically 4 times as broad as c cell, hyaline, entirely microtrichose.

Legs: Proleg and mesoleg brown, apex of femora and basal ⅔ of tibiae pale, mesobasitarsomere slightly lightened. Metaleg brown, pale on apex of metafemur and base of metatibia, pale on apex of metabasitarsomere and other metatarsomeres, 5th metatarsomere light brown.

Abdomen: Brown; 3.3 times as long as thorax. First tergite white pilose. Second tergite narrow and very long, length 6 times minimum width, and with central elongated triangular region of dull black pollen; 2nd tergite pile white on baso-lateral ½, otherwise with black pile, pile mostly apressed, except erect laterally. Third tergite trapezoidal and long, length 2.8 times minimum width, with central pair of small vittate pale maculae; 3rd tergite with large central triangular region of dull black pollen, and with appressed and black pile, except white basolaterally. Fourth tergite sub-quadrate, and with appressed and black pile; remaining characteristics as on 3rd. Fifth tergite rectangular and wide; remaining characteristics as on 4th. Genitalia: Cercus with 1 row of pile on medial margin and 3 rows on lateral margin. Surstylus sub-oval on lateral view, directed apically, with setulae (around 14) ventrally on apex and 4 setulae basally, sparse pilose on basal ½ of the dorsal surface. Subepandrial sclerite subtrapezoidal, homogeneously sclerotized. Hypandrium with ventral notch rounded and extending to anterior ⅔. Basiphallus with posterior extremity thick; distiphallus with anterior surface undulated, apex curved anteriorly. Postgonite with ventral surface straight, dorsal surface slightly concave; postgonite apex convex ventrally and with acute dorsal extremity.

Female. Female unknown.

Length. 8.5mm; wing 6mm.

Distribution. Costa Rica (Limón), Venezuela (Zulia).

Primary type. Holotype: Male, in good condition, now glued to a point, although originally in 100% EtOH; DNA was extracted (by immersion in heated solution for 24h) prior to mounting. Genitalia dissected and placed in a plastic tube pinned with the specimen. Holotype labels: ‘ COSTA RICA. Limón, Verágua // research station, small hilltop behind // butterfly garden, 09° 55.520N // 83° 11.439W. 14 Sep 2008, // Col. G.F.G. Miranda (CAV 38)’ ‘ Holotype // Pelecinobaccha // humillima // Miranda’ [red label].

Paratypes. VENEZUELA. Zulia, El Tucuco (45kmSW of Machiques), 5–6 Jun 1976, A. S. Menke & D. Vincent (1 ♂, USNM ENT 00257714).

Comments. This species is very similar to species of the genus Relictanum gen.nov., but it is distinguished from that genus by the presence of a second row of shorter pile on the dorsal occiput, and by genitalic characters.

This species corresponds to sp 54 in the cladograms of Miranda (2011).

Etymology. The specific epithet is an adjective and it means ‘humble’ or ‘small’.
