Figs. 14, 15, 16, 17 View FIGURES 13 – 18 , 81 View FIGURE 81 .

Protemnemus rosenbergii Vollenhoven, 1871 (original spelling of species name maintained).

Notes. Potemnemus rosenbergi ferrugineus Kriesche, 1923 View in CoL was synonymized by Breuning (1944) and De Jong (1947). We agree with Breuning (1944) and De Jong (1947) that P. rosenbergii ferrugineus is a junior synonym of P. rosenbergii .

P.wolfi Berchmans, 1925 View in CoL was synonymized by Breuning (1944) and was also assumed to be a synonym by De Jong (1947) However, De Jong did not formalize it. We resurrect P. wolfi View in CoL sp. res. (see under this species).

Examined type specimen. HT ♀ RMNH (photo examination), BL = 44.0 mm, Indonesia, Papua, Manokwari.

P. rosenbergii ferrugineus Kriesche, 1923: 429 ( Fig. 15 View FIGURES 13 – 18 )

Examined type: HT ♂ MNHUB, BL = 32.5 mm, Papua New Guinea, Butanang, Kelana, 1887, leg. S. Rohde.

Morphological characteristics: a large and broad species (BL = 32.5–47.0 mm) with body approximately 3.0 x longer than wide (Figs. Figs. 14–16 View FIGURES 13 – 18 ). Antennae: relatively long in both sexes, extending beyond apices by about 4–5 antennomeres. Thorax: the colour of pronotum is brown and speckled with reddish-brown pubescence, and laterally, below each pronotal spine, with white longitudinal pubescence ( Fig. 17 View FIGURES 13 – 18 ). There are also two to six small white pubescent spots medially on pronotum ( Figs. 14–16 View FIGURES 13 – 18 ). Elytra: three series of white pubescent patches and spots on each elytron, of which the anterior spots (slightly above middle of elytra) are almost forming a transverse white band ( Figs. 14–16 View FIGURES 13 – 18 ). Lateral carina and epipleuron with a series of small granules, whereas the granules anterio-medially on elytra often are larger ( Fig. 16 View FIGURES 13 – 18 ). Elytra is mottled with reddish-brown pubescence. The slightly elevated and transverse ridge on the middle of elytra is weak. Legs: mottled with a mixture of short brownish, greyish and whitish pubescence. Venter: prosternal process with a large and elongate, blunt tubercle anteriorly. Venter is mottled with a mixture of short brownish, greyish and whitish pubescence.

Remarks. This rarely collected species is easily separated from all other species of Potemnemus by the reddish-brown pubescence and the white patches on elytra. P. rosenbergii has been found on both the eastern and western parts of the island of New Guinea ( Fig. 81 View FIGURE 81 ).
