This species develops in the decaying wood of trees in at least 12 families ( Horn 1861; Solomon 1995; Linsley and Chemsak 1997; Vlasak and Vlasakova 2002). Craighead (1950) noted that N. brunnea also bores into conifers, but no records were found to support his statement. Based upon my evidence, this species can emerge from decaying wood that has been dead for ca. 7–8 years.
