Quercus palmeri (Engelm.) Engelm., Bot.
status

Quercus palmeri (Engelm.) Engelm., Bot. View in CoL View at ENA California 2: 97 (1880).

Quercus chrysolepis Liebm. subsp. palmeri Engelm., Trans. Acad. Sci. St. Louis 3: 393. (1877). Type :— U.S.A., California: E. Palmer 30 (Holotype: MO-204133!; isotypes: A!, GH!) .

Quercus dunnii Kellogg View in CoL , Pacific Rural Press 17(23): 371 (1879). This is an invalid name because Kellogg cited it as a provisional name.

Distribution: Mexico (Baja California, Baja California Sur, Chihuahua, Sonora), U.S.A. (Arizona, California).

Quercus peduncularis Neé, Anales Ci. Nat. View in CoL 3: 270 (1801). Type:— MEXICO, Guerrero: L. Neé s. n. (1791) (Lectotype: MA26474 ! designated by Valencia-A. & Coombes (2020, p. 87); isolectotypes: MA!, UCSB (fragment p.p. as to smaller leaf from MA lectotype)!, UCSB (fragment)!).

Quercus affinis M.Martens & Galeotti View in CoL non Scheidw. (1837), Bull. Acad. Roy. Sci. Bruxelles 10(1): 222 (1843). See Q. martensiana View in CoL below.

Quercus barbanthera Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 68, pl. 81 (1924). Type :— GUATEMALA: G. V. Skinner s. n. (1845) (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): K000648587 !). Valencia-A. & Coombes (2020, p. 87) invalidly lectotypified the name based on Trelease’s image of the holotype at B which was destroyed. A paratype exists at K and according to Article 9.12 of the Code “If no isotype, syntype or isosyntype is extant, the lectotype must be chosen from among the paratypes if such exist” (Turland et al. 2018). The epitype, Miranda 6429 ( MEXU10381 View Materials as image!) which they selected is also invalid, because of the existence of the paratype which is now the lectotype.

Quercus barbanthera var. calva Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 68 (1924). Type:— GUATEMALA, Chimaltenango: E. T. Heyde & E. Lux 3152 (Lectotype (designated here): K000512621 !; isolectotypes: NY!, US!). Trelease (1924. p. 68) cited two different collections in the protologue.

Quercus callosa Benth., Pl. Hartw. View in CoL 91 (1842). Type:— GUATEMALA, Guatemala: T. Hartweg 616 (Lectotype: K000512622 ! designated by Trelease (1824, p. 218, pl. 82a); isolectotypes: CGE!, K!, LD (image)!, NY!). There are two sheets of Hartweg 616 in the Bentham Herbarium at K, one of which was effectively lectotypified by Trelease.

Quercus comasaguana Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 43 (1924). Type:— EL SALVADOR, La Libertad: S. Calderon 1430 (Lectotype (designated here): ILL00007525 View Materials !; isolectotypes: GH!, US!). There is no indication in the protologue as to where the holotype was deposited, and both the ILL and US specimens are labeled as a type.

Quercus dolichopus E.F.Warb., Bull. Misc. Inform. Kew 1939 View in CoL (2): 87 (1939). Type:— MEXICO, México: G. B. Hinton 6378 (Lectotype: K000575005 ! designated by Valencia-A. & Coombes (2020, p. 87); isolectotypes: BM!, F!, G!, GH!, K!, MEXU!, MO!, NY!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!) .

Quercus liebmannii Oerst. ex Trel. View in CoL f. brevipes Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 67, pl. 75b (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Oaxaca: F. M. Liebmann 3526 (Holotype: C not located; isotypes: C!, CAS!). The holotype of Q. liebmannii f. brevipes View in CoL at C is missing although isotypes exist at C and CAS. A photo of part of the holotype is in Trelease (1924) pl. 75b which is Liebmann 3526 (Cupulif. Lbm. 136); hopefully the specimen with the correct Cupulif. Lbm. number and matching the photo will eventually be found. The placement of this species needs additional study, but we consider the type to fall within the variation found within Q. peduncularis View in CoL as broadly interpreted.

Quercus martensiana Trel., Contr. U.S. Natl. Herb. 23(2): 182 (1922). Type:— MEXICO, Veracruz: H. Galeotti 90 (Holotype: BR0000009816213 !; isotypes: G!, K!, NY!, P!, UCSB (fragment)!). Nom. nov. for Q. affinis M. Martens & Galeotti (1843) non Scheidw. (1837).

Quercus martensiana f. perplexans Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 60 (1924). Type :— MEXICO, Veracruz: F. M. Liebmann 3567 (Holotype: C 10012502!) .

Quercus peduncularis subsp. callosa (Benth.) A.Camus, Chênes Texte View in CoL 2: 599 (1939).

Quercus peduncularis subsp. pedicularis var. callosa (Benth.) A.Camus, Chênes Atlas View in CoL 2: 91 (1935).

Quercus peduncularis subsp. pilicaulis (Trel.) A.Camus, Chênes Atlas View in CoL 2: 91 (1935).

Quercus peduncularis subsp. pilicaulis var. macrodonta (Trel.) A.Camus, Chênes Atlas View in CoL 2: 91 (1935).

Quercus peduncularis subsp. pilicaulis var. obovalis (Trel.) A.Camus, Chênes Atlas View in CoL 2: 91 (1935).

Quercus pilicaulis Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 67, 77b (1924). Nom. nov. for Q. tomentosa var. abbreviata A. DC (1864) View in CoL non Q. abreviata Vuk. (1889) .

Quercus pilicaulis f. macrodonta Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 68, pl. 78 (1924). Type:— GUATEMALA: J. R. R. Warszewicz 15 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): G00390238!; isolectotype; UCSB (fragment from G lectotype)!). Trelease (1924, p. 218) in the caption to pl. 78a designated Warscewicz 15 at B as the holotype of Q. pilicaulis f. macrodonta View in CoL and treated Q. tomentosa var. bullata A.DC. View in CoL as a synonym for which Warsczwicz 15 at G was a syntype and which he effectively lectotypified in the caption to pl. 78b. We are lectotypifying Q. plicaulis f. macrodonta View in CoL based on the specimen of Warsczwicz 15 at G.

Quercus pilicaulis f. obovalis Trel.,Mem.Natl.Acad.Sci. View in CoL 20:68,pl.79b(1924). Type :— GUATEMALA, Chimaltenango: F. C. Lehmann 1725 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype: UCSB000351 View Materials (fragment)! designated by Valencia-A. & Coombes (2020, p. 87); isolectotypes: BM!, G). Lectotypification of this name was based on a fragment at UCSB rather than the isotype at G from which the fragment was reportedly taken or the other isotype at BM.

Quercus schultzei Trel., Repert. View in CoL Spec. Nov. Regni Veg. 33: 316 (1934). Type:— MEXICO, Guerrero: L. Schultze 115 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): ILL00007589 View Materials ! (fragment)).

Quercus splendens Neé, Anales Ci. Nat. View in CoL 3: 275 (1801). Type:— MEXICO, Guerrero: L. Neé s. n. (1791) (Lectotype: MA25972 ! designated by Valencia-A. & Coombes (2020, p. 87); isolectotypes: MA!, UCSB (fragment)!).

Quercus tomentosa Willd. View in CoL nom. illeg., Sp. Pl., ed. 4(1): 437 (1805). This is a superfluous name because Willdenow cites Q. peduncularis Neé (1801) View in CoL , which is an older name, in synonomy.

Quercus tomentosa Willd. nom. illeg. var. abbreviata A.DC., Prodr. 16(2.1): 33 (1864). Type :— GUATEMALA: J. R. R. Warszewicz 43 (Holotype: G00421035 !; isotype: UCSB (fragment from G holotype)!). Although Valencia- A. & Coombes (2020, p. 87) lectotypified this name, it was not necessary as A. de Candolle clearly specified the holotype.

Quercus tomentosa Willd. nom. illeg. var. bullata A.DC., Prodr. 16(2.1): 33 (1864). Type :— GUATEMALA: J. R. R. Warszewicz 15 (Lectotype: G00390238 ! designated by Trelease (1924, p. 218, pl.78b); isolectotype: UCSB (fragment from the G lectotype)!). A. de Candolle (1864, p. 33) cited two syntypes.

Quercus tomentosa Willd. nom. illeg. var. communis A.DC., Prodr. 16(2.1): 33 (1864). Type :— GUATEMALA: J. Warszewicz 17 (Lectotype: G00390235 ! designated by Valencia-A. & Combes (2020, p. 87)). A. de Candolle (1864, p. 33) cites several syntypes.

Distribution: Mexico (Baja California).

Quercus perseifolia Liebm., Overs. Kongel. Danske Vidensk. Selsk. Forh. Medlemmers Arbeider 1854: 188 (1854) . Type:— MEXICO, Veracruz: F. M. Liebmann 3476 (Lectotype: CAS0006172 View Materials ! designated by Trelease (1924, p. 225, pl. 292a); isolectotypes: C!, UCSB (fragment from the CAS lectotype)!). The lectotype is sheet Cupulif. Liebm. 98. Trelease (1924, p. 149) described the fruit as annual although most collections we have seen are biennial. It is known that some species of Quercus View in CoL have both annual and biennial fruit, not only within the same species, but even within the same population (Pons & Pausas 2012).

Quercus perseifolia f. microcarpa Trel., Overs. Kongel. Danske Vidensk. Selsk. Forh. Medlemmers Arbeider 1854: 188 (1854) View in CoL . Type:— MEXICO, Veracruz: H. Galeotti 112 (Lectotype (designated here): BR!). Trelease cited two specimens without designating which one was the type.

Distribution: Mexico (Hidalgo, México, Michoacán, Nuevo León, Oaxaca, Puebla, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas,

Veracruz).

Quercus pinnativenulosa C.H.Mull., J. Arnold Arbor. View in CoL 17(3): 171 (1936). Type :— MEXICO, Nuevo León : C. H. Muller & M. T. Muller 1342 (Holotype: A00055690 !; isotypes: CAS!, F!, MEXU!, TEX (image)!). This species may be the same as Q. perseifolia in the broad sense. Additional study is needed.

Distribution: Mexico (Coahuila, Hidalgo, Nuevo León, Oaxaca, Puebla, Qurerétaro, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas,

Veracruz).

Quercus planipocula Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 136, pl. 259a (1924). Type :— MEXICO, Nayarit: J. N. Rose 1970 (Holotype: US00089613!; isotypes: GH!, MO!, NY!, UCSB (fragment)!).

Distribution: Mexico (Colima, Guerrero, Jalisco, México, Michoacán, Nayarit, Oaxaca, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa,

Quercus juergensenii Liebm., Overs. Kongel. Danske Vidensk. Selsk. Forh. Medlemmers Arbeider 1854: 188 (1854) View in CoL . Type:— MEXICO, Puebla: F. M. Liebmann s. n. (Holotype: C (missing); isotype: UCSB (fragment from C holotype)!). Although the foliage is described by Liebmann, the only remaining specimens at C when Trelease visited there were acorns. These acorns are now missing at C and the only extant ones are a few now at UCSB. Trelease also considered this be a problematic species but perhaps synonymous with Q. polymorpha View in CoL , which is a name that has priority.

Quercus petiolaris Benth., Pl. Hartw. View in CoL 55 (1840). Type:— MEXICO, Jalisco: T. Hartweg 420 (Holotype: K000648582 !; isotypes: A!, BM!, CAS!, CGE!, E!, FI!, G!, LD (image)!, LE!, NY!, P!, UCSB (fragment)!).

Quercus pilicaulis f. hurteri Trel., Mem. Natl.Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 68, pl. 80 (1924). Type :— GUATEMALA, Quezaltenango: W. Trelease 37 (Holotype: ILL00007598 View Materials !) .

Quercus purpusii Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 76, pl. 105 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, México: C. A. Purpus 1794 (Holotype: MO-143916!; isotypes: F!, GH!, NY!, UC!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!) .

Quercus reticulata Bonpl., Pl. Aequinoct. View in CoL 2: 40, pl. 86 (1809). Type:— MEXICO, Guanajuato: A. Bonpland s. n. (Lectotype (designated here): P00129698!; isolectotypes: P!, UCSB (fragment)!). There are four Bonpland s. n. collections from Santa Rosa, Guanajuato, Mexico which are syntypes of Q. reticulata View in CoL . The lectotype has the name “ Quercus coccolobaefolia sp. n. ” in Bonpland’s hand. Bonpland, however, used the name Q. reticulata View in CoL in his publication. The syntypes of Q. reticulata View in CoL are not the same collection as Bonpland 4269 which is the collection number for the type of Q. coccolobifolia Trel. View in CoL

Quercus reticulata f. longa Trel., Mem. Natl.Acad. Sci. 20: 75, pl. 99a (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Hidalgo: C. Ehrenberg 897 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): image in Trelease (1924, pl. 99a)!). No extant original material exists, so we are lectotypifying the name based on the image of the holotype.

Quercus reticulata subsp. reticulata var. conglomerata (Trel.) A.Camus, Chênes Atlas View in CoL 2: 93 (1935).

Quercus reticulata subsp. reticulata var. squarrosa (Trel.) A.Camus, Chênes Atlas View in CoL 2: 94 (1935).

Quercus reticulata subsp. rhodophlebia (Trel.) A.Camus, Chênes Atlas View in CoL 2: 94 (1935).

Quercus reticulata subsp. rhodophlebia f. concava (Trel.) A.Camus, Chênes Texte View in CoL 2: 581 (1939).

Quercus reticulata f. squarrosa Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 75, pl. 99b (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Hidalgo: G. J. Graham 328 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): image in Trelease (1924, pl. 99b)!). Trelease (1924. p. 219) wrote in the caption to pl. 99b that the type was an Ehrenberg collection at B. He cited five of Ehrenberg’s collections earlier on p. 75. Because they were all destroyed, it is impossible to know which collection number (903, 904, 905, 906, or 908) was the holotype. The image in pl. 99b is probably of a collection made in Hidalgo, Mexico, because all the Ehrenberg collections around these numbers are from Hidalgo. Trelease also cited two Graham collections, of which we have found only Graham 328 which is a different species, so we are not lectotypifying the name based on either of the paratypes but rather on the image of the holotype in plate 99b.

Quercus rhodophlebia Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 74, pl. 95a (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Zacatecas: J. N. Rose 2806 (Holotype: US 00089626!) .

Quercus rhodophlebia f. concava Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 74, pl. 95b (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Jalisco: J. N. Rose 2998 (Holotype: US00089623!; isotypes: GH!, MO!, NY!, UCSB (fragment)!).

Quercus sideroxyla Bonpl. f. aquifolia Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 170 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Guanajuato: A. Dugès 4 (Holotype: GH00969956 !). The specimen of Dugès 4 at US is Q. tridens View in CoL so it cannot be considered an isotype.

Quercus suchiensis Warb., J. Roy. Hort. Soc. View in CoL 58(1): 187, fig. 55 (1933). Type:— MEXICO, México / Michoacán: R. Heatley s. n. (Holotype: K000575026 ! and K000575027 !). The holotype was originally mounted on one sheet but now it is mounted on two sheets. The type collection is “on the boundaries of the states of Mexico and Michoacan.”

Quercus uhdeana Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 75, pl. 100 (1924). Type :— MEXICO: Uhde 276 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): image in Trelease (1924, pl. 100)!). No extant original material exists, so we are lectotypifying the name based on the image of the holotype.

Quercus rysophylla Weath., Proc. Amer. Acad. Arts View in CoL 45: 423 (1910). Type:— MEXICO, Nuevo León: C. G. Pringle 10225 (Lectotype: GH00069922 ! designated by Trelease (1924, p. 225, pl. 279a); isolectotypes: ASU (image)!, CAS!, DAO (image)!, DUKE (image)!, ENCB (image)!, F!, IBUG (image)!, LE!, LL (image)!, MICH!, MSC (image)!, RSA (image)!, UC!, UCR (image)!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!, VT!, WIS!, YU (image)!).

Quercus tenuiloba f. hirsuta C.H.Mull., J.Arnold Arbor. View in CoL 17(3): 178 (1936). Type:— MEXICO, Nuevo León: C. H. Muller 2122 (Holotype: A00055647 !; isotypes: MEXU!, MO!, P!, TEX (image)!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!). Although the species epithet is based on a probable hybrid collection (see Appendix 2), the type of this forma is Q. rysophylla View in CoL .

Distribution: Mexico (Coahuila, Hidalgo, Nuevo León, Oaxaca, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas, Veracruz).

Quercus sagrana Nutt., N. Amer. Sylv. View in CoL 1(1): 17 (1842). Type :— CUBA, Pinal del Rio: R. de la Sagra 418 (Holotype: PH00023400!; isotypes: G!, P (as s.n.)!, UCSB (as s.n.) (fragment)!).

Quercus cubana A.Rich., Hist. Fis. View in CoL Cuba 11: 230 (1850). This is an illegitimate name because it is based on an isotype of Q. sagrana Nutt., R. de la Sagra View in CoL [J. M. Valenzuela] s. n., which is at P as P00754080!. J.M. Valenzuela was a collector for R.de la Sagra and all of the type specimens of both Q. sagrana View in CoL and Q. cubana View in CoL were almost certainly collected by him. Richard (1850) cited J.M.Valenzuela as the collector of Q. cubana View in CoL , but Valenzuela’s name is not on the any of the specimens distributed by de la Sagra.

Quercus oleoides Schltdl. & Cham. var. sagrana (Nutt.) C.H.Mull., Amer. Midl. Naturalist View in CoL 65(1): 37. (1961).

Quercus oleoides subsp. sagrana (Nutt.) Borhidi, Acta Bot. Acad. Sci. Hung. 17: 6 (1971[1972]).

Quercus virginiana Mill. var. sagrana (Nutt.) Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 113, pl. 189b (1924).

Distribution: Cuba.

Quercus salicifolia Neé, Anales Ci. Nat. View in CoL 3: 265 (1801). Type:— MEXICO, Guerrero: L. Neé s. n. (1791) (Lectotype: MA25957 ! designated by Muller & McVaugh (1972, p. 520); isolectotypes: MA!, UCSB (fragment)!). We are treating Q. salicifolia View in CoL in a broad sense to include what could be recognized as many separate species if a narrower species concept were adopted. Further study of this species complex is needed.

Quercus acapulcensis Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 153, pl. 302a (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Guerrero: E. Palmer 334 (Holotype: GH00069901 !; isotypes: CAS!, DS!, F!, K!, NY!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!) .

Quercus boquetensis Standl., Publ. Field Mus. Nat. Hist., Bot. Ser. View in CoL 22(1): 13 (1940). Type:— PANAMA, Chiriquí: M. E. Davidson 780 (Holotype: F!; isotypes: GH!, MO!, US!). Additional study is needed to determine if Q. boquetensis View in CoL might actually be a good species.

Quercus borucasana Trel., Mem. Natl.Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 161, pl. 315a (1924). Type:— COSTA RICA, Cartago: A. S. Oersted 3491 (Holotype: C10014102 !). Nom. nov. for Q. granulata Liebm. (1854) View in CoL non Raf. (1838).

Quercus citrifolia Liebm., Overs. Kongel. Danske Vidensk. Selsk. Forh. Medlemmers Arbeider 1854: 187 (1854) View in CoL . Type :— COSTA RICA, Cartago: A. S. Oersted 3461 (Lectotype (designated here): C 10012469!; isolectotypes: C!, CAS!, G!, UCSB (fragment)!). Trelease (1924) in pl. 288 shows two different specimens, but in his caption for pl. 288 states “The type (Costa Rica, Oersted, 6=3461).” Specimen 6=3461 is the bottom image of pl. 288 and is being lectotypified here, and 8=3461, the top image, which is now at CAS , becomes an isolectotype. A third specimen, 7=3461, is an isolectotype at C.

Quercus eugeniifolia Liebm., Overs. Kongel. Danske Vidensk. Selsk. Forh. Medlemmers Arbeider 1854: 185 (1854) View in CoL . Type:— COSTA RICA: J. R. R. Warszewicz s. n. (C) (Lectotype (designated here): image in Trelease (1924, pl. 316a)!). Liebmann (1854, p. 185) wrote “Guatimala [sic] et Costa rica [sic] leg. Warsewicz [sic] (in hb. reg. Berol.!) Species affinis Q. salicifoliae Née. ” Trelease (1924, p. 161, pl. 316a) effectively lectotypified Warszewicz C at B. The photograph in pl. 316a is Q. salicifolia View in CoL . The lectotype at B was destroyed, and because there are no extant specimens of Warszewicz at C, we are lectotypifying the name based on pl. 316a. Trelease cites Warszewicz 29 as also being Q. eugeniifolia View in CoL , although without stating where he saw the specimens. If this specimen was at B it was destroyed, and the specimens of Warszewicz 29 at G and P are Q. acutifolia View in CoL .

Quercus eugeniifolia f. petiolata Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 161, pl. 316b (1924). Type :— COSTA RICA: C. Hoffmann 863 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): image in Trelease (1924, pl. 316b)!). No extant original material exists, so we are lectotypifying the name based on the image of the holotype.

Quercus granulata Liebm. View in CoL non Raf. (1838), Overs. Kongel. Danske Vidensk. Selsk. Forh. Medlemmers Arbeider 1854: 186 (1854). See Q. borucasana View in CoL above.

Quercus mulleri Martínez, Anales Inst. Biol. Univ. Nac. Autón. View in CoL México 24(2): 51, fig. 1, 2 (1953[1954]). Type :— MEXICO, Oaxaca: T. MacDougall 2435 (Holotype: MEXU00011238 View Materials !; isotypes: CAS!, ENCB (image)!, UCSB (fragment)!).

Quercus nixoniana S.Valencia & Lozada-Pérez, Novon View in CoL 13(2): 261, f. 1 (2003). Type :— Mexico, Guerrero: R. de Santiago 747 (Holotype: FCME; isotypes: BH, IBUG, MEXU, MO, XAL). The relegation of this epithet to synonymy is based on the protologue and illustration as well as examination of numerous paratypes.

Quercus obtusanthera Trel., Repert. View in CoL Spec. Nov. Regni Veg. 33: 318 (1934). Type:— MEXICO, Guerrero: L. Schultze 343 (Holotype: at B destroyed). The determination of Q. obtusanthera View in CoL as probably Q. salicifolia View in CoL is based on Trelease’s (1933) description as no images or original specimens exist.

Quercus petiolata (Trel.) A.E.Murray View in CoL non Schur (1857), Kalmia View in CoL 13: 27 (1983).

Quercus rubramenta Trel., Repert. View in CoL Spec. Nov. Regni Veg. 33: 318 (1934). Types: MEXICO, Guerrero. L. Schultze 371 and 372 (Syntypes: at B destroyed). The determination of Q. rubramenta View in CoL as Q. salicifolia View in CoL is based on Trelease’s (1934) description as no images or original specimens exist.

Quercus salicifolia var. seemannii (Liebm.) Wenz., Jahrb. K View in CoL ̂nigl. Bot. Gart. Berlin 3: 207 (1884).

Quercus seemannii Liebm., Overs. Kongel. Danske Vidensk. Selsk. Forh. Medlemmers Arbeider 1854: 188 (1854) View in CoL . Type:— PANAMA, Veraguas: B. Seemann 1228 (Lectotype: K000575040 ! designated by Trelease (1924, p. 226, pl. 317a); isolectotypes: BM!, G!, GH? (as s.n.)!, K!, UCSB (fragment)!). Liebmann (1854, p. 188) wrote “leg. Seemann (Coll. n. 1228 in hb. Hook.!)” but there are two collections of Seemann 1228 in the Hooker Herbarium, both of which are named by Liebmann in his hand as Q. seemanni Liebm.

Quercus tahuasalana Trel., Mem. Natl.Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 154, pl. 302b (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Michoacán: E. Langlassé 211 (Syntypes at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): G00358146 !; isolectotypes: GH!, K!, P!, UCSB (fragment from G lectotype)!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!). Trelease (1924, p. 154) wrote “ Langlassé, 217, June 18, 1898, the type” but on p. 226 in the caption to pl. 302b he wrote “The type (Mexico, Langlassé, 211).” The image detail in pl. 302b is from B now lost. Both Langlassé 211 and 217 are Q. salicifolia View in CoL and are considered to be syntypes.

Distribution: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico (Chiapas, Colima, Durango, Guerrero, Hidalgo,

Jalisco, México, Michoacán, Morelos, Nayarit, Oaxaca, Puebla, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Veracruz, Zacatecas ),

Nicaragua, Panama. The occurrence of Q. salicifolia in México, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, and Zacatecas reported by

Villaseñor (2016) needs to be confirmed.

Quercus sapotifolia Liebm., Overs. Kongel. Danske Vidensk. Selsk. Forh. Medlemmers Arbeider 1854: 185 (1854) View in CoL . Type :— GUATEMALA: G. V. Skinner 6 (Holotype: K000512931 !) .

Quercus amissiloba Trel., Publ. Field Mus. Nat. Hist., Bot. Ser. View in CoL 17(4): 357 (1938). Type:— HONDURAS, Comayagua: T. G. Yuncker et al. 6379 (Holotype: ILL00007474 View Materials !; isotypes: F!, G!, GH!, K!, MO!, NY!, US!) .

Quercus apanecana Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 152 (1924). Type:— EL SALVADOR, Ahuachapan: P. C. Standley 20187 (Holotype: US 00089403!) .

Quercus donnell-smithii Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 162, pl. 318 (1924). Type:— GUATEMALA, Guatemala: J. D. Smith 1967 (Lectotype (designated here): US00089494!; isolectotypes: GH!, NY!). Although Trelease cited Smith 1967 as the type, there is no indication of a collection locality. In pl. 318 two different specimens are shown which Trelease says “are two variants of the type.” Neither of these is a good match for the NY or US specimens.
