Type material. Holotype male ( BMOC 20-0303-010), 2 male and 12 female paratypes from Passerina ciris (Linnaeus, 1758) ( Passeriformes : Cardinalidae ), (SVM-15-1013-5/2), USA, Georgia, Statesboro, Georgia Southern University Campus, 32°25’15”N, 81°47’22”W, 14 April 2014, coll. C. R. Chandler.

Depositories. Holotype and 6 female paratypes—UMMZ, remaining paratypes—ZISP.

Description. MALE (holotype, range for 2 paratypes in parentheses) ( Figs. 5 View FIGURE 5 , 7 View FIGURE 7 A–D, G). Idiosoma, length × width, 430 (415–425) × 210 (205–210), length of hysterosoma 275 (265–275). Prodorsal shield: length along midline 135 (130–135), greatest width posterior to level of scapular setae 150 (145–150), anterior part at level of trochanters II not narrowed, anterolateral extensions rounded, not extending to bases of epimerites Ia between legs I and II, lateral margins not fused with scapular shields, posterior margin straight, surface without ornamentation. Internal scapular setae si spiculiform with filiform apex, 33 (27–32) long, separated by 62 (62–65); external scapular setae se separated by 100 (90–100). Setae c2 filiform, 45 (45–50) long, situated in anteromedian angle of humeral shields. Setae c3 narrowly lanceolate, with bidentate apex, 28 (22–26) long. Hysteronotal shield completely separated into prohysteronotal and lobar parts, total length 265 (255–260). Prohysteronotal shield: length along midline 170 (165–180), width at anterior margin 145 (140–145), lateral margins at level of trochanters III with shallow concavities flanked by bean-shaped sclerotized patches, DHA absent, surface without ornamentation. Dorsal setae d1, d2, e2 present. Setae f2 absent. Length of lobar shield excluding terminal lamellae 98 (90–95). Opisthosoma strongly attenuate posteriorly, opisthosomal lobes fused with each other along midline forming a heavily sclerotized median septum, only apical parts of lobes posterior to level of setae h2 separated by narrow parallel-sided terminal cleft. Length of cleft from anterior end to lobar apices 28 (26–28), length from anterior end to apices of terminal lamellae 53 (52–55), width 7 (6–7). Terminal lamellae semi-ovate, with smooth margins, length from bases of setae h3 to lamellar apices 32 (30–32), greatest width 28 (25–27). Distance between dorsal setae: c2:d2 78 (75–80), d2: e2 85 (82–85), e2:h2 75 (72–75), h2:h3 23 (22–25), h2:h2 43 (40–43), h3:h3 33 (30–33), d1:d2 42 (35–45), e1: e2 35 (37–42), ps1:h3 8 (7–10).

Epimerites I free. Rudimentary sclerites rEpIIa small ovate. Genital apparatus: length excluding basal sclerite 45 (42–45), greatest width 21 (18–20), aedeagus short conical, epiandrum ovate, latigenital sclerites absent, distal ends of parameres without denticles. Anterior and posterior genital papillae subequal in size, anterior papillae more distant from midline than posterior ones. Postgenital plaque small, represented by low bow-shaped fold. Setae g filiform, shorter that half-distance between setae g and ps3, with bases almost touching. Sclerotized areas around setae g (rudimentary genital shield) absent. Adanal apodemes heavily sclerotized; apophyses ridge-shaped with right-angular anterior ends. Lateral margins of opisthosoma with narrow membranes. Translobar apodeme present. Adanal shields represented by small triangular sclerites around bases of setae ps3. Adanal suckers 13 (13–15) in diameter. Inner ends of epimerites IIIa with apices not extending to level of setae 4b, without extensions on inner margins. Epimerites IVa short, with anterior ends not reaching level of setae g. Setae 4b situated slightly anterior to level of setae 3a; setae g at level of setae 4a or slightly posterior. Distance between ventral setae: 4b:3a 8 (7–12), 4b:g 80 (75–82), g:ps3 40 (37–40), ps3:h3 100 (92–100), g:g 5 (4–5).

Setae cG, mG of genua I, II filiform. Genual solenidia σ I and σ II situated slightly closer to distal margins of corresponding genua ( Fig. 7A, B View FIGURE 7 ). Trochanteral setae sR III narrowly lanceolate with acute apex, 20 long. Legs IV with ambulacral disc extending slightly beyond level of setae h3. Tarsus IV 33 (33–35) long; modified setae d barrel-shaped, with discoid cap, situated in distal one third of this segment; modified setae e button-like, without cap, situated apically ( Fig. 7C View FIGURE 7 ). Length of solenidia: σ I 58 (57–62), σ II 12 (10–13), σ III 25 (20–25), φ IV 48 (42–48).

FEMALE (range for 10 paratypes) ( Figs. 6 View FIGURE 6 , 7E, F View FIGURE 7 ). Idiosoma, length × width, 485–520 × 215–225, length of hysterosoma 330–355. Prodorsal shield: shaped as in male, 135–140 long, 145–155 wide, surface without ornamentation. Setae si thin spiculiform, 28–30 long, separated by 65–68; setae se separated by 100–105. Setae c2 filiform, 40–43 long, situated in anteromedial angle of humeral shields. Setae c3 narrowly lanceolate, with bidentate apex, 20–28 long. Hysteronotal shield: length from anterior margin to posterior tips 300–325, width at anterior margin 150–155, lateral margins at level of trochanters III with shallow concavities flanked by bean-shaped sclerotized patches, DHA absent, median area from level of setae e1 to setae e2 with minute ovate lacunae. Dorsal setae d1, d2, e2 present. Setae h1 filiform, about 10 long, situated anteromesal to bases of setae h2, 20–22 from corresponding lateral margins of hysteronotal shield. Width of opisthosoma at level of setae h2 85–90. Setae ps1 situated equidistant from outer and inner margins of opisthosomal lobes. Supranal concavity open posteriorly into terminal cleft. Length of terminal cleft from anterior end of supranal concavity to lobar apices 135–140, length from free margin of interlobar membrane to apices 92–100, width of cleft at level of setae h3 30–35. Interlobar membrane occupying anterior 1/5th of terminal cleft. External copulatory tube short conical, situated on free margin of interlobar membrane, 7–9 long; basal guides of copulatory tube barely distinct, primary spermaduct guide in supranal concavity well developed. Distance between dorsal setae: c2:d2 75–77, d2:e2 82–92, e2:h2 55–60, h2:h3 55–60, h2:h2 70–75, h3:h3 50–53, d1:d2 40–43, e1: e2 38–42, h1:h2 12–17, h1:h1 34–36, ps1:h3 12–14.

Epimerites I free. Epigynum 42–45 long, 96–102 wide. Inner margins of epimerites IIIa with small denticle or without it. Epimerites IVa small. Adanal sclerites barely distinct or absent. Setae f2, ps2 present. Head of spermatheca with semi-ovate peak, primary spermaduct without enlargement, secondary spermaducts 20–22 long ( Fig. 7E View FIGURE 7 ).

Legs I, II as in males. Trochanteral setae sR III narrowly lanceolate with acute apex, 18–20 long. Legs IV with ambulacral disc extending to midlength between setae h2 and h3. Length of solenidia: σ I 53–60, σ II 10–12, σ III 22–25.

Differential diagnosis. Among previously known species of the capensis group, the new species, Trouessartia ciris sp. n., is closest to T. mangaratibensis Berla, 1959 , because only in females of these two species of the group setae h1 are setiform. Additionally, in both species, setae g in males are filiform. Trouessartia ciri s differs from the latter by the following features: in both sexes, setae c3 are lanceolate with a bidentate apex; in males, rudimentary sclerites rEpIIa are small and ovate (about 5 long), setae 4b are situated anterior to the level of setae 3a, and the postgenital plaque is represented by a small bow-shaped fold; in females, the external copulatory tube is short and conical (7–9 long), and the posterior 1/3 of the hysteronotal shield bears small ovate lacunae. In both sexes of T. mangaratibensis , setae c3 are lanceolate with an acute apex; in males, rudimentary sclerites rEpIIa are large and pear-shaped (about 15 long), setae 4b are situated posteriorly to the level of setae 3a, and the postgenital plaque is represented by a horseshoe-shaped fold; in females, the external copulatory tube is about 20 long, and the anterior half of the hysteronotal shield bears several large ovate lacunae near the lateral margins.

Etymology. The specific epithet is taken from the species name of the type host and is a noun in apposition.
