Diagnosis:
Head not wider than mesonotum; cleft in front; occipital sclerite broad so eyes appear stalked; genae without processes but with small pointed tubercles (
Figs 24, 25
, arrow). Antennae longer than body (
Fig. 65
); with third segment long and swollen, covered with circular sensoria; terminal setae short, subequal and pointed. Forewing obovate, rounded apically, without costal break; pterostigma present; vein M arched so it converges with Rs on the third quarter of the wing and then diverges; cell m1 subtriangular; cell cu1 long and low (
Fig. 53
). Meracanthus short and weakly curved; metacoxa with a prominent tubercle between meracanthus and insertion of trochanter; femora apically with a group of long stout setae; metatibia without genual spine, apically with spurs varying from 1+2+3 to a crown of 8; metabasitarsus with 2 apical spurs.
Biology and damage:
Immatures produce large quantities of wax and honeydew, and can be found grouped on the lower leaf surface near the midrib (
Fig. 72
), although when populations are high they invade the whole plant (
Fig. 73
) (Burckhardt
et al.
2013; Queiroz
et al.
2013). Attack produces curls along the edges of leaflets and then deformations of the leaflet, along with chlorotic and necrotic points, withering leaflets which then fall. In severe attacks plants suffer of premature defoliation and branches have a dry and crumbly appearance (Queiroz
et al.
2013).
Host-plants:
Cedrela
and
Toona
(Meliaceae)
(Burckhardt
et al.
2013).
Distribution:
Neotropical (Burckhardt
et al.
2013).—
