The following male does not have any label data about the specific country where it was collected: 1 ♂ ( USNM ), 24-II-1912 , Tobagolsl, WI , A. Busck col. Diagnosis. Prosaspicera splendida is similar to P. pseudoclavata , both having very long scutellar spine ( Figs 7 & 8). The notauli are well defined in P. splendida ( Fig. 7a ) but not in P. pseudoclavata . ( Fig. 7b ); the scutellar spine is strongly curved in P. splendida (Fig. 8a) and nearly straight in P. pseudoclavata (Fig. 8b). Moreover, the shape of female antenna in both species is different since last antennomeres form a pseudoclava in P. pseudoclavata . Description. Length. Females 2.2–2.7 mm .; males 2.4–2.9 mm . Coloration . Head and mesoscutum black, pronotum, mesopleurae and metanotum dark brown to black. Scutellum brown. Antenna light brown except for 3 or 4 last segments dark brown, entirely brown in males. Legs brown with some lighter areas, hind legs darker in males. Some specimens are entirely light brown. Head . Frons coriaceous, with strong frontal carinae. Lateral frontal carinae conspicuous, area between them and eye coriaceous. Occipital carina angled behind dorsal 1/3 of eye. Gena glabrous, expanded, coriaceous and weakly carinated transversely, in males it is strongly carinated transversely. Vertex very incised, flat centrally, coriaceous and with weak transverse carinae, in posterior part coriaceous and with one longitudinal carina on each side of median vertical groove, which is weakly coriaceous in females and almost smooth in males. Ocelli conspicuously prominent. Occiput coriaceous, delimited with one weak transverse carina. Antenna . FEMALE. Filiform. Antennal formula: 4(2): 1.8(2): 8.5(1): 8(1): 7(1.5): 5.5(1.5): 5(1.5): 4.5(1.5): 4.5(1.5): 4(1.5): 4(1.5): 4(1.4): 8(1.5). MALE. Filiform. Antennal formula: 4(2.5): 1(2): 7.5(1.9): 6.5(1.5): 6.5(1.5): 6(1.5): 5(1.2): 5(1.2): 5(1.2): 4.5(1.2): 4(1.2): 4.5(1.2): 4(1.2): 6(1.2). Mesosoma . Lateral surface of pronotum coriaceous with some strong carinae on the dorsal 1/3 (only one or two in males), sparsely pubescent. Subpronotal plate coriaceous and glabrous. Mesoscutum with scattered setae, coriaceous. Antero-admedian lines weakly prominent, reaching between 1/4 and 1/3 the length of the scutum, almost parallel. Median ridge prominent and divided before median mesoscutal furrow. Notauli smooth, very wide near posterior end and narrowing towards anterior end. Median mesoscutal furrow weakly sculptured. Area between notauli and end of median mesoscutal furrow conspicuously prominent. Parascutal sulcus quite wide smooth and glabrous, not continuing to anterior end of notauli. Mesopleura coriaceous on anterior 1/4 and smooth in posterior part, in males some posterior coriaceous areas. Scutellum 3.02 to 3.60 times length of scutum, 2.4 to 3.2 in males. Scutellar foveae heart-shaped (longitudinally oval in males), rather deep, smooth but with weak oblique carinae in posterior part, with posterior margin; interfoveal line interrupted before posterior margin of scutellar foveae. Lateral carinae meeting behind scutellar foveae and continuing along spine. Scutellar disc and spine coriaceous. Basis of scutellar spine, in lateral view, at same plane as scutellar foveae, downwards directed, strongly curved and reaching end of radial cell of wing. Wings . Forewing membrane yellowish. Radial cell 2.60 to 2.84 times longer than wide, 2.90 to 3.22 in males. Marginal pubescence very long and starting before Rs. R1 very short or absent and Rs straight. Derivatio nominis. Refers to the extremely long scutellar spine that this species has. Biology. Unknown. Distribution. Neotropical and Eastern Palaearctic. Known from Costa Rica , Brazil , Venezuela , Peru , Ecuador , Colombia , Bolivia and Japan .
