Specimens photographed at Lissenung Island by Dietmar Amon on 18 Apr. 2009 , and at 12 m depth by Dean Tully on 15 Sept. 2012 ; a video of a specimen taken from Alexander Passage , off southeastern New Hanover , 5–14 m depth, at St. KR 96, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell ). Distribution and habitat. New Ireland : 1, 2, 4.—General distribution: Red Sea, East and South Africa , Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Wake Atoll, northern Line Islands and Pitcairn Group, north to southern Japan , south to northern New Zealand and Kermadec Islands. Found solitary or in small groups in caves and crevices of coral and rocky reefs, 2–50 m depth. Marine.
